View Full Version : Short Animation: '2d Or Not 2d'
dprodr 05-30-2003, 09:06 AM Hey everyone!
I've just finished my animation course with my good friend John Lee, who seems to be just about everywhere at the moment (well done mate!).
Here is my short film '2D or not 2D' - [it uses divX]

There isn't much of a story as the initial idea had to be cut significantly due to time restrictions, but I feel it works as a test to integrate traditional 2D animation into a CG environment.
Any comments would be much appreciated. If there's any problems with the link please let me know.
Take care,
Dal.

DL's a little slow, but I'm still waiting.
i'm half way on DL accelerator, its would be tough on 56k, but
I guess 16.6 mbs would be anyway.
yeah, this is a pretty long DL, might want to try to get a
mirror.:surprised

holy crap, that was damn good, brillient idea. I loved it.
the little jim carey dance (right?), very funny.
I think I might have added a little SFX with that explosion,
but other than that small thing.
top notch, I post a mirror on my site, its the end of the month,
if I don;t get hammered I leave it for a while.
I'll give you URL asap

I don't really comment on too many things from here, sure I like what I see and all I just don't take the time to respond to everyone... I guess I'm guilty for being one of them quiet people that just nosey around.. oops
... but anyways, I really loved the idea behind it and all, in a way it's a inspiration to get back in to trying out some old 3d I once did once apon a time.
keep up the good work
(I'm suprised it hasn't gotten any more comments)
p.s. roguenroll: thanks for the mirror it helped

Fantastic work. :applause:
I'll second what j00st81 said about the monitor exploding.
Also, since we're on the subject of explosions...the bomb going off in the paper lacked 'oomph' since it had no accompanying sound effect. Everything else was fine without sound FX, but the explosion needed it, IMO.
Either way, great animation.

Hey (Disney) Dal
Wow man, front page! I knew you would do it!
The last 3 years have gone by so quickly.... I've said this about John Lee, and the same applies to you. Rarely do they get students of this quality at the school. Your desire to become accomplished (DaVinci style) in so many areas of the arts has given you a solid grounding as a professional. I haven't seen a graduate already at disney level- and one who gan draw perfect anatomy from memory. Topped by an excellent attitude and gritty determination, the future holds no boundries for you my friend.
If someone reads this from a good studio - hire this guy now!
See ya soon

You second years will be fine as long as you work hard and listen to Rocky music on those long lonely mornings!
Thanks John and Sinbad. You've both been a huge help this year. Couldn't have done it without you guys.

Rivendale: I know what you mean about having contact with the bomb in the monitor. Initially the end scene was gonna be a lot longer, but the deadline loomed fast so i had to cut it. Might finish it off one day.

ed209 and Frinsklen: I totally agree with you on the camera work. I wanted to go back, re-do it and re-render it but, alas, time was not on my side.
TANGOMAN: The rigid body at the start was partly deliberate, but i see what you mean about it being too stiff. There are a number of errors in the animation sequence on the paper, and some of the jerkiness occurred during the scanning and compositing processes.
Thanks,

cool film, nice idea for playing with 2D and 3D, sort of reminds me of the film the visitor.
One concern, you should change the title, and darn soon, That title is already used for a classically animated film in production at the Canadian NFB for a few years now by famous Animator Paul Driessen, produced by Marcy Page:/
smann
06-01-2003, 02:22 AM
very nicely done.
This is meant more as a question, and really has less to do with the animation, ( as I think its great)
but more about the amount of replies that say "very original"
Im assuming they mean the 2d drawn character coming out of the page.
This has been down since the dawn of animation on a film medium. The Fleischer Brothers comes to mind with thier out of the inkWell cartoons where the characters live on and off the page, as well as some of the old Disney TV shows of the early studio when walt disney chased donald duck under the pad on his desk.
It makes me wonder how much Animation history people actually know?
I would think of it more of an adaptation, A very good one, and of course the scanner being the technical advance shown.
Great piece of work! This is not meant to downplay your success, more of a thread of this thread.
good luck

I think its simple and magnificiant at the same time. The way it's done flows with the music.. sure it may not be a perfect flow but it just has a certain classy feeling to it. I really find it inspiring in some ways despite it's simplicity :D I like I like :D

CG artists, quite a few wouldn't, but I don't think they mean the idea rather then the implimentation, even in the recent film the visitor which plays on the same idea, you dfind the classically animated character drawn and composited on top of the film or 3D, where as this one actually has the character in the 3d environment not only a moving drawing but a bending folding drawing that casts a shadow and such.

Hey Dal.
Fantastic short! I actually own the 2dornot2d.com domain but have been so busy with real life these last few years (amazing what kids and a family can do to your time, though it's worth it) that I haven't had time to use it. If your interested I'd be happy to transfer over the domain to you, no charge. If your up for it, just PM me and we can see what we need to do.
Once again. love the short!!
pretty nice, but I felt your character was a little 'flat' ;)
Seriously though, he gets a bit boring after the first minute IMO. The dancing on the scanner was a nice touch. It's a great showcase of your technical abilties, so should do great in your portfolio :)
Good job

Well the concept is failry different and its all hand drawn, so over all the films won't be that identical save the title.
Here's the synopsis to Paul Driessen's film (not to be confused with Paul Driessen that woprked on Dronez, they are two different people)
From their vantage points on separate hills, Frieda and Bruno are attracted to one another. However a strange line stands between them. On closer examination, the lovers see that it is a long, thin, two-dimensional wall keeping them apart. Further investigation plunges Bruno into a world of dimensional uncertainty. Will he ultimately find his way through shifting 2D space to Frieda?

How about '2D for' then? or 'License 2D' or maybe 'inDi 2D or not 2D'.
