ethan roots 05-30-2003, 07:13 AM hey kids!
I'm in need of a new video card.. what's the best video card for animation and playing games, etc?? Any big difference between the quadro and the regular GEForce cards? How about the quadro 4 and the quadro fx? there are so many!! so hard to choose... any advice would be great!

in gaming terms, there's bugger all difference between a quadro and a geforce card based on the same chipset and clockspeed.
viewport rendering is an entirely different issue, especially when you start getting into hi poly scenes with compelx lighting and texturing.
speaking from an extremely biased point of view, the best card you can get is a quadroFX 2000. make sure you're sitting down when you check the price tho. :)
How much money can you spend on it?

Elvis or anyone in the know could you give me a clue to this question please: How does a Quadro 900 compare to a Ge-force 5900 when it comes to rendering and moving geometry in viewports when in 3D Max?
And how about a 750 compared to a 900? Also in gaming any differences?
Sorry for hi-jacking your thread ethan roots
but we can learn all this together, it seems we have the same questions for the most part.
;)
Thanks for any help.

thanks for the replies!
btw, i'm primarily going to be using it for maya.. i'm basically looking for the best price/performance card i can get right now...always can upgrade in the future when the prices drop on the top of the line cards.. is the quadro fx that much better than the quadro 4?
Got me a Quadro 750 and it runs perfectly - I tend to use LW and Messiah:Animate. I wouldn't bother with the 900 the difference between 750 and 900 is minimal (IMHO).
The stats at NVIDIA's site should tell you everything...
http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?PAGE=quadrofx
http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?PAGE=quadro4xgl
As you'll see the FX 2000 wipes the floor with the other cards.
I'm afraid I haven't tried out my card with any games... should really get round to playing Warcraft 3. :buttrock: :airguitar :buttrock:

The 980 XGL has about a 10-30% boost over the 900 and since they are priced about the same, I think it makes a good price/performance competitor to the 7x0 XGL cards.
Quadro FX 2000 and FX 1000 are the fastest cards on the market right now and also the highest precision (128 bit color, 128 bit floating point render pipelines, 12 bit sub pixel precision).
As always, check http://www.spec.org/ and look for the SPECviewperf and SPECapc scores of the various cards you are looking at. Don't see a particular card up there? That is because it is getting its but whipped on that particular test compared to the stuff that is up there so the results were pulled or never posted.

it'd be nice if SPEC themselves did a generic beige box setup to test cards. that would be much better than companies submitting their own benchies and systems all the time.
that would also mean that we'd finally see some of these crap cards getting their butts kicked, and have a much better idea of what to avoid!

i'm not entirely sure to be honest. i've never had the chance to compare the two in similar hardware directly.
complete speculation on my behalf: i'd be tempted to go the quadro4 900 route over a geforce based card if any sort of pro 3d (especially 3dsmax with the nvidia maxtreme drivers) was my sole income.

Maxtreme makes a whole lot of difference. With Quadro cards you have better chances of making it work.
