I'm part of the multimedia team over at NASA. We just launched our interactive celebration for NASA's 50th Anniversary (http://www.nasa.gov/externalflash/50th/main.html).
We used Maya for most of the rockets and satellite animations, iClone for the astronauts and other people, and Maya for the Automa, our robot guide. I was fortunate enough to design, model, and voice the robot.
Photos and Photoshop were used to assemble the landscape. We used Particle Illusion for the rocket launches. There's also quite a bit of Flash programming, animation, and video throughout.
Enjoy!
