Howdy,

Here's a new project I just started. It's actually my first attempt at modeling a character. Most of my models so far have been inanimate objects.

Howdy,

Thanks. I reckon most people would start with the head, but this one started out as just a boot model and then progressed to the legs. Now I'm working on the upper body. Sort of like backwards modeling.

like the wrinkles and modelling a lot, looks very believable, but are you going to animate him, if so i think it is going to get kinda hard.

Howdy,

Well, I reckon it would be "Cowboy", but I prefer the terms: Desperado, Outlaw or Gunslinger.

Howdy,

I am planning on having all the extras on this model. I had even thought of using Shave for his handle bar mustache.

I might use some of the accessories I've already modeled for this scene I did a while back when all I had was Cinema 4D GO:

I just finished modeling the vest last night. Now it's on to the shirt.

Hi Cactus,

Very nice start. It has a very realistic look.
Besides this is just the second CG cowboy
I know (the first one is Toy Story's Woody).
Most CG artists create fantasy or SciFi models
so it would not harm to have some more
CG-outlaws.

kinda in keeping with this...don't wanna mess up your thread cactus...but i saw your cowboy accessories...so
how would you guys model this part of a revolver?
loft nurbs or better boole? or some other way?

ThirdEye
06-01-2003, 02:56 PM
loft nurbs or a simple extrusion and welding

flingster
06-01-2003, 03:04 PM
cheers ThirdEye_01...think loft is clean.

Sorry once again to cactus...for your thread...didn't think it warranted another thread though.

Howdy,

Here's an update on my character WIP. I just finished the hand (whew!). Next is the head, but I seem to keep putting it off after seeing how difficult the hand was to model.

Cactus Dan

lookin' sweet! :D
although a bigger image wouldn't be too bad.:hmm:
and ccan we have a wire plz.

JIII

meesa wants a wire, loveing those hands. Make surethis guy gets a good enviornment.

Cactus Dan
06-14-2003, 06:46 PM
Howdy,

Ok, here is a wire. I get a message telling me that the image is too large if I try to make them any bigger.

Howdy,

And here's the top.

wow very nice hands, I particuarlily like the mesh underneath this is one of those few spots where I have never had an overly clean mesh.

Cactus Dan

Howdy,

Yes, the underside of the hand is a little less detailed than the top and it seems that I struggled with it more just to get it that far. I still have a problem with the area between the thumb and the first finger. When I look at my own hand there's a lot of loose, folded skin inbetween there that I'm not sure exactly how to model.

Adios,
Cactus Dan

Very good work, Dan. Hands are a bitch. I think the thumb should be rotated a 5-10 degrees so the nail is a closer to parallel with the back of the hand.

This hand has a big similarity with Otto's one. Not that hard to model, just delete the rest of Otto's body...

Pasto, you should have taken a closer look at Ottos hand before posting :shame:

Good job, Cactus!

Well I did, sorry if I am wrong but I really felt it was the same. Same way of polygon division, at least.

oops, you where absolutely right Pit, the top is rather the same, the bottom is completly different.
I do apologyse.

Howdy,

Very observant. I did use Otto's hand as a reference guide. I started with the hand tutorial on the Maxon sight and then refered to Otto's hand to finish it off. You really learn a lot from other people's examples. Even with good examples to go by it still was difficult for me to complete. When I put my hand next to Otto's, mine isn't quite as good as Otto's, but it'll do for this model and it was a great learning experience. Now if I can just get up the courage to start on the head. I'll probably spend some time going through some of the head tutorials that I've bookmarked. Maybe that will give me a little inspiration.

wow i love that hand. I can never do something that detailed, but yet simple and real-like!

Finish it now ;)

I have a feeling that you'll have success with the head... the rest looks too good.

Hi Cactus -

if you havenīt already, read this thread before you start the head modeling:

Cactus Dan

Howdy,

Well, I finally got up the nerve to start on the head. I tried several times with different modeling methods but ended up starting with a disk polygon object where the eye should be and using Arndt's Edge Extrude Pro to keep adding polygons. That way I could get a better handle on the topology. I've still got quite a way to go but at least I'm off to a good start.

Thanks Pit, for the tip and link to that thread on topology.

Man cactus dan if you don't watch out you will be like a new thirdeye. If that head is as good as the boots and hands were this is gonna be really impressive.

lol I saw your pic in the picture thread. Maybe you should do a self portrait.

Really looking very good so far.

Cactus Dan

Howdy,

Well, here is the finished head. I reckon he needs some hair and a handlebar mustache (with a five o'clock shadow). Ok, on to the accessories.

looks very promising, really nice and clean mesh!:applause: the only thing i am not sure aout is the upper eyelid, looks kinda off, but gotta say that it is pretty hard to crit something cause the render is so small, too small imo. :hmm:

Cactus Dan
07-03-2003, 02:36 AM
Howdy derwolpertinger,

Yeah, now that I look at it closer, it does need a little more work on the upper eyelid. Thanks.

Adios,
Cactus Dan

Cactus Dan
07-03-2003, 03:21 AM
Howdy,

Ok, here's the fix on the eye. I didn't have enough subdivisions around the eye to get that upper eyelid fold-over right the first time.
