Some really fun stuff on your reel Justin. I've seen some of your personal animations before, but never your veggie tales/321 Penguins stuff. Look'n good.

Solid as always, Justin. You'll be fine. It won't be long before somebody is gonna snatch you off the open market.

And fellas, you should see his paint fixing reel! Whoo-boy, can this boy poke a pixel or what?! ;)

Thanks for the comments, folks!

keithlango: Water? Coming right up, sir. (best I could find on short notice)

KWAK: "Paint-fixing" is the term we used at Big Idea for the process of manually (i.e. in a paint program) touching up render errors on individual frames or groups of frames, and it's how they put me to work when I was first hired before they could give me any animation assignments. Keith was just joking about the existence of such a reel. If paint-fixing is done properly, you can't even tell that anything was fixed, so a reel of such fixes would be pointless.

roguenroll: Thanks! I have this odd attraction to finely-tuned lip-sync for some reason. Can't quite explain it...

Wiz: Good idea.........done! (update online) :) You know, I'd thought about that several times, but didn't actually try it until you mentioned it. Can't quite explain that, either... :hmm:

steveblake: Glad you like the idea generator. The odd thing is that I've barely used it since creating the thing. Another one I can't explain.

I think I have some explaining to do...

Yo Justin,
What happened at Big Idea? How come you're not there anymore?
You probably live a few blocks away from me. (Naperville).
If my company ever looks to hire, I'll let you know.
Nice demo, but I know that many companies will ask you what you did (model, character rig, texture?) on those scenes (especially since Veggie Tales is so well known). I would add stills of each anim at the end (during credits/scatman) and write down what you did. If you did everything then make sure you say that too.
It would push your demo to be about 2 mins long which is a perfect length.

Very nice,

The only thing that I can think of is maybe working on getting the lips to sync up closer to the words.

Great going Jason!

Looks like you lived up to that challenge of showing what AM can do with lip-synking. I have always loved that scatman clip. Only problem is that I find it hard to learn off because it moves so damn fast!

Now I really have some explaining to do!

I didn't expect this to make the front page, but because it did, my site traffic has gone through the roof! My host is pretty understanding about traffic spikes that take it over the limit, but then again there's never been quite a spike like this before (there was enough traffic in the last 24 hours to cover my allotment for over a year). Regardless of the consequences, I'm flattered that someone put it on the front page, humbled by all the kind words spoken, and greatly appreciative of the support as I look for work.

el paso: The fish-shlapping scene was one of my all-time favorite assignments, and I'm really happy it turned out so well.

taylor: Yeah, throw that lens flare bad boy my way! I think my next reel will feature a primitive character juggling chrome spheres over a checkerboard floor. A few lens flares will give it that extra oomph! ;)

Fingolfin: Re: Big Idea, things haven't been going too well over there. The entire production staff was let go in mid-April, and all shows are being outsourced from now on. Re: the reel breakdown, I tend to shy away from putting that stuff on the reel itself. When I apply for work, I include a breakdown sheet with the reel that tells what I did in each clip. However, your comment reminded me that I didn't put that list on my web site to accompany the online reel. Better do that. Thanks for the reminder!

jocko: The idea generator is just an Excel spreadsheet that uses lists of words to randomly generate quick ideas. If you're at a loss for something to animate, a few clicks will give you phrases like "mean bird stumbling," "giddy man pacing," "sleepy cucumber screaming," etc. Just something to spark the imagination.

Atmos_Fear: For the bulk of the clips (everything but the beginning and end), I only did animation, so I couldn't really tell you much about materials and lighting and such. I don't think it was anything special, though. Just a lot of solid colors and even (but not flat) lighting. The only thing "special" would be the mouth shader used for the Veggie characters...and I really can't explain that, other than it's some Maya trick where a NURBS curve is used to drive the application of some shader attributes. That's all I know. Sorry.

CgMonkey: Scatman died? I had no idea...

FxWhizKid: Thanks for the tip! I'm familiar w/ ReelFX, although I haven't sent a reel there yet.

Okay, now I gotta go appease the web-hosting gods...

Mere moments ago I accepted a position as Lead Animator at Digital Production Solutions in Newark, NJ, thanks in part to this reel (i.e. the VHS version I sent them). There are only a few weeks before I start work, so it's on to the great house/apt hunt. My days in Chicago are numbered...

Thanks again to everyone for their comments and support. Cheers!

Hi there, Justin! Love the reel. It's fun to finally check out some more of your BI stuff. I have to agree the fish slapping was the best!

Excellent job on the scat lip-sync. You always were one to challenge the insane. Which reminds me, we never did do that walking-on-your-hands walk-cycle... I started one but never finished...

(Maybe with Jason's Flare generator and Keith's guidance we could make it work!)

Keep up the good work and show them over in NJ how to do it right! :-)

Cheers,
Jds
