"Video game developer/distributor The 3DO Company has filed for bankruptcy protection. The makers of the HIGH HEAT baseball and ARMY MEN franchises state that development will continue on previously announced titles like THE FOUR HORSEMEN OF THE APOCALYPSE while the company restructures itself. 3DO makes games for all the major gaming consoles. i'm suprized! and not so suprized!

I used to work there!!! man.. I hope the folks still there
find places to work.

but I have heard that actually there are a few games still
being worked on, so they're not totally out of business yet!

I'm still in shock though!

Trip Hawkins was talking at my college only 'bout two weeks ago for an IGDA get-together, guess someone should of asked how the ol' company was doin. (he was, by the way, ecstactic about Four Horsemen).

I think we'll see this more and more. Seem's like there's alot of larger game studio's who continue to produce subpar title after subpar title.

I'm sure most of the staff at 3D0 will be swallowed up at other studio's. It's a kick in the pants but that's the industry these days.

Kind of funny in that the game company I work for shut down this week too. Not really funny... wrong word.

Chapter 11 means they'll stay open and keep operating as normal as possible. They just won't have to pay their old bills for a while. If they get things straightened out they could be back to normal with not a whole lot of impact on the employees. That could change if they can't get their house in order during restructuring. In which case the bankruptcy judge could decide to liquidate (sell) all assets and shut the place down (resulting in folks getting laid off). So while not good, chapter 11 is not the end of a company. Yet.

Here's hoping they can get their act together so the folks who want to stay can stay.

ps: I'm almost positive we're going to be seeing more companies and studios filing for bankruptcy protection in the coming months. Chalk it up to crazy spending & borrowing for technology companies during the internet boom followed by a deep, long recession where investment funds to keep such places afloat dried up. Ouch.

Well, If you saw their booth at e3....you can't be too surprised. They were hidden off in a corner and their booth was all but empty. Too bad. It probably sucks worse if you were on contract with them.... now they don't have to pay you. OOOF! :thumbsdow :thumbsdow :thumbsdow

yeah,
I did hear a rumor that hey layed off alot of folks,
with no sevrence or anything.. I guess they dont have to give any aid if they file chap 11.

I did hear that the 4horsemen team is still around,
that was my old team, trip was super ecstatic about our last project, portal runner, also. and it flopped bigtime.

4horsemen looked like a grand idea! which is a much better start than portal runner.. which looked like some bullshit, but they had all these excuses as to why it'll be great... only to see it turn out to be some bullshit.

But yeah, good luck to 3do!!
