Hi Everyone, I'm a Maya user that just recently got a max demo from Discreet  Loving it!

However I can't for the life of me figure how to snap vets to a griidline using a hotkey. In maya I can grab a row of vets hold x and they will snap to the gid lines. Anybody know the hotkey for this in max? Tried the hotkey map, but that thing is kinda annoying to read.

Thanks!!

Well, have you made yourself familiar with the OSnaps dialog? If not, right-click on the little magnet icon with a 3(or 2 or 2.5) on it, and it will bring up a little window with the available Max object snaps. You'l note gridpoint, and endpoint. These are probably what you'l want to use. Turn them on.

You can, at this point exit the dialog. The snaps are now active, and will appear with little icons when you're in the sub-object level of your mesh, ie, vetex mode. You can turn on and off these snaps by pressing the "s" key on your keyboard.

To align a bunch of verts(and I'm assuming the centerline of your mesh), you can just window the verts you want on that grid line, and snap them from thier endpoint(vertex) to a grid point(or line).

Maya users have some problems with this, as Max lacks the feature to tell all verts to be on the same plane, and then to move as a group to a givien location, ie, a grid point.

There are tools available to do these things, but require a script(free) that adds the ability to the software. Welcome to Max. If the tool is not in the base package, chances are, it's available for free from somewhere else.

Anyway, glad you're enjoying the package, and If this did not answer your question, please let us know, and we will attempt to answer you better.

3DZealot,

Thanks a bunch, that really helped! Although it looks like I will have to use a script to align my verts on the same plane. I am loving Max, it looks like it might be my next purchase. The bevel is awesome! It's so much nicer then Maya's  I also really like modeling non organic type things in Max a lil better then Maya. I think they both kick-ass though :buttrock:

One last thing. First, go here:

www.scriptspot.com

And download the script called "MeshTools 2.5".

Follow the instructions on how to load it, and you will get the function you want.

Second, you can align all the verts in a selection, by right-clicking on the move icon, which will bring in the transform type-in floater. You can then assign a value for all the selected verts. That's why it's a good idea to keep you models on the center line, so that you can just window the stray verts, and then align them to 0X, 0Y, or 0Z.

Anyway, real glad you are enjoying max, and I hope we can help with any other problems you may have. Also remember that Max's online reference(actually stored on your Harddrive) is really fantastic and can answer most of your questions. Just hit F1.

This has got to be the first time I've heard a Maya user saying they prefer Max's bevel tool:p

Glad you're enjoying Max; I wish I could say the same about Maya. Well, it's not that I don't like it, it's just that I'm having a hard time adjusting to the "fit" of it. Plenty of folks here are cross-trained, though, so if you have a question then ask away. There are even certain ways of customizing Max so that it behaves more Maya-like. I have the spacebar set up to maximize whatever viewport is under the mouse, for instance.*

Good luck with the new toy!

to align your verts in editable poly use meshtools or cspoly tools (sorry cant remember which)...wether you snap the first and align after or align then snap i dont know b'cos i never do it...

or if you dont wanna dl a couple of scripts then convert to editable mesh and use "view align"...this will align your verts perpendicular to your view, so if you want them aligned in the horizontal then goto the top view and align them (having selected them before of course)

hope this helps

Thanks for the links and script recommendations guys. Meshtools is awsome, and this soft selection in Max is wonderful. I also love being able to zoom with my scroll wheel on my mouse. :bounce: Also these built in tutorials on Max are outstanding.

Note in the subobject->vertex controls for editable poly there are buttons to align a selection of vertices to the currently active grid, so if you select a bunch of vertices, go to the top viewport and click grid align, it projects them straight down/up to the xy grid. View align's been mentioned, and that's a handy one too. Another useful tool is the make planar button; it's handy when you need to make the adjacent faces flat.
