View Full Version : Sketchbook Thread of Lempface
Lempface 07-30-2008, 01:21 AM So I haven't drawn much in my life and haven't practiced much with this tablet I have had for a year now. I find it pretty cumbersome and hard to draw nice curves and I feel I can draw much better on paper. But, I just don't like to :). I'd much rather have an infinite palette at my disposal and unlimited undoes. So, I decided to start practicing and actually got something I didn't find entirely awful, hooray! However, my proportions are obviously off and my anatomy is pretty poor too. So any tips would be appreciated. I have a reference, a gesture drawing and then an over paint I did to it because she came out a bit fat and awkward. So I was trying to self critique my own work so maybe in the future I'd see it better the first time. Problem is, I'm not so sure my overpaint is that much more accurate.
Well here are the pictures, and the reference is a nude so I'll link to it.

Hey,
I know exactly what you mean about the tablet... I cant sketch with this thing for the life of me... I would say just play with the settings and push the values of your sketch, it's coming along nicely...
The reference you're using is... well... distracting...

I've scribbled alot in the past but this is the first time I've ever tried to paint something. It looks a little flat and lifeless to me but it is recognizable so that's a plus. I don't think its that bad for a first try but I'd like to blend the colors better but I'm not sure how to go about it, any tips would be appreciated.
EDIT: I'm using OpenCanvas if that's of any relevance.

Hi there, I've merged your two threads and renamed it as your Sketchbook - you'll get far more feedback in the Sketchbook section which is why. :)
Really like the apple, I'd encourage you to do more of those studies! Welcome to the forum. :)

so here is a quick eye. nothing great but I'm pretty impressed with how quickly I've been able to come up with something decent. this is only my third drawing so even though the proportions are off and the eyelashes suck I like now the values came out

Hi Stephen! Welcome! Great start! Thanks a lot for the link! beautiful pictures!!
Hi
One thing I noticed is both your linework and your shading consists of rather short and nervous strokes. I think you need some challenges in your life so here is one:
get rid of the short strokes and lines... limit your strokec count as much as you can.
And when you do place a stroke, think about
FLOW
CONTINUITY
SCHWUNG
Check out Alena's sketchbook thread (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=200&t=635850)and you'll see what I mean.
Also, please don't expect this to be exactly the way you want it in a couple of days. Skill takes months, even years to develop. So practice as often as you can and you will improve vastly!
Hope I'm not being too harsh and you'll take on the challenge ;)

NR43 I think the tablet is limiting my ability on longer strokes. I feel like I can do much better with a pencil. I'm not sure if its the way I'm holding the tablet or the tablet pen or the way my wrist sits when I use it but its difficult for me to just draw a nice smooth circle, for example, in one or two smooth lines. They always come out bumpy and oblong. But if I use short strokes it seems to give me more control over the contour.
And I've been using OpenCanvas and the brushes in that have a lower opacity so it seems easier to blend and shade with shorter strokes. I have two books, The Natural Way to Draw by Nicolaites, and.. well I can't remember the other hah.
Any tips for being smoother with a tablet or any tutorials on what you were discussing. I looked at her sketch book and it was very nice, especially the gesture drawings on the first page.
Well it could be that your tablet is too small for you. What size is it? I have an A4 and it sometimes limits me, but if I'm really honest, it's all about practice... and making drawing a routine. The only way to grow a steady hand is to draw every day as much as possible, be it on paper, tablet, canvas, cardboard, walls or floors...
What helps me a lot is to draw from the shoulder as much as possible instead of from the wrist. Also, getting the same position as with traditional drawing helps (I put my wacom on the edge of my desk, so it is oblique to my stylus and I won't draw or paint skewed.
About Flow etc... The best person to have explained this to me is Glen Vilppu in his Gesture DVD. If you can, get it! It's not cheap but it's worth every single penny!

Hi Stephen
Nice painting going on there!
Don't worry about the tablet feel, you will get used to it if you use it enough believe me.
Cheerio Chris
