View Full Version : Underwater Lighting
mountaingoat7 07-29-2008, 07:21 PM Hello, I need help making that underwater lighting effect in Maya. I have a whale modelled and animated, I am now working on the lighting and textures. Here is an example of the lighting I am trying to accomplish.

I'm pretty new to Maya, so any advice in a step by step formula would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,

I used to Use Maya, and there are pre-set scenes you can use with caustics and lighting already set up including distant Fogging
I am more a Max user and If I were to re-create that image, first off I would get the fogging looking right so set that up first, place in a free 3D model from 3D world or from the web, as a way to measure how much, at what distance to set fog to.
Have a spot light projecting a caustic map as well so you get that dappled light effect over the surface of the Whale, Shark whatever.
Here is an image I created of a sunken ship, its only a rough set up and took a day to create, it's more of a comp job and shows what difference fogging makes to a scene, when playing with levels and curves in post.

Oh, wow, that ship looks good, I figured out the lighting (there was actually an ocean shader in the color presets for the lights) but maybe I should check out that whole fog effect. You can generate fog in the 3d program? Or is it a post-production thing?

I think Floze released a tutorial about this with mental ray. Search his name and you will find it.
