I did this to try to understand what's a head:rolleyes:
I come to the conclusion that the model itself is not so good and lacks reality, did this with no refs. I should probably do it all other again using, this time, photos as ref.
Anyway, I'd be happy to hear a few comments on this:

excelent textures!!! :D
but you definetly need refs

My first head wip without a ref

and now something I'm currently working on with reference pictures
http://notendur.centrum.is/~czar/3d/Char09/char03.jpg

refernce pictures are soooo important when head modeling :)

Yep, you're right, need photo.

I like you're head, simple, but with a lot of character. Only thing is why did you model it mouth open ?

Great textures. I especially like the hair and the bump for the skin. The only thing is that the eyes in the lower pic don't seem to match the model. They look like they would belong to a creature rather than a human. Looking good though!

textures are awesome, I really like that hair.... however, dont make the eyes shiney now, that seems to be the thing to do these days, apply a massive specular/reflectivity of eyes. *sigh* anywho, I also think his ears look plasticky and over simplified... maybe go back and try and fake some SSS and maybe re-detail the ear.

great work tho, is there going to be an animation?
Cheers,

Wow this is an awsome piece. so much character. Keep it up I cant think of any suggestions it looks spot on to me. The only tweaking I think you will get(suggestions) will be based on personal taste at this point. Really cool, I could see this guy in a Music Video of Nigel Dicks or some other cutting edge guy.
rockon.

The texturing and lighting for this are great!
Its just the model that lets it down, you should definately do another with refs as Im sure it would be up there with the best.

Thanx all for the nice words :)
I've been away for some "moving for a new flat" reasons :)
I have hard time on the eyes, I don't know, I thought they were suposed to have some reflection, but it seems it is too strong, got to look closer to this.
Yep modeling, yes yes, will redo...
Ears are quite simples, and so the modeling. In the beginning I was looking for some simple eficient head (and full body) character for some later cel shaded anim. I finally let it grow to this, that's why it's not so realistic, and that's why the ears are weak:shrug:
Don't know if I will try to animate a full real looking char yet, seems a lot of work:D
Thanks william for the support :)
Thank you all :)

This is an incredible "no-ref" portrait!:bounce:
As far as eye specularity goes... I think the main problem you're having is that the reflection goes clear to the edge of the lid... and right OVER the lid in the first pic! The reflection should stop prior to the lid. Given the location, though... some Rx place or university lab, it looks like... I think the high spec is perfectly appropriate.
This guy looks like some creepy robot or alien... close enough to being a realistic human that the things that are "off" seem disconcertingly off.
Trying to do something like this without any direct reference is a great way to see what you really know. Certainly you'll be able to go even further using reference... but, what you've done is testament to the internalization of an extraordinary amount of understanding about the human face.
Hats off to you sir! Marvelous job!

Excellent texturing but I think your modeling could use some work. His nose doesn't seem to look right with his brow. Keep it up man...

nice model..
but his skin looks a little waxy.. to less of a sort of noise in the skin.. shows to be a little flat.. the lip texture seems a little of to.. make his skin a little darker.. with more tints..and less hdri in the eyes.. soften it out a little.. ;)

Yep I've seen this for the eyes problem.
I can't find a way to fix it, each time eyes are rotating, they seem to be cross eyed. But they don't, they both have same ° rotation.
This might be due to the eye shape itself, but I have no idea of what is wrong with it.
If someone could tell me

heya facial deluxe,
it looks really nice, I've seen it before. I think it was in the lw forum. and I really liked the main part of it there. though I have a few suggestions.

the eyes don't "pop" enough imo.
you could try to make the eyeWhite whiter. to separate it more from the skin. maybe also darken the iris of the eye texture could help you some there.

the lower lip looks a little strange. almost like "fish skin".
here are some refs,
lips image (http://www.fellah.net/temp/lips.1.jpg)
notice the blue lines at the vertical lines in the lips. I think it's these ones you should concentrate on bringing forward the most. with a few horizontal, weeker bumps..

maybe it would be better if the skin was be a little darker. or more appropriate maybe, not so "luminos" as it is now. the inside of the nosetrills is usually dark to.

just suggestions, great start so far. I will keep an eye on this thread ;)
take care
