Why not do tutorials that are on the internet. They are free and will learn you much more then all the books togheter can teach you.
And if you really are looking for good books, you should try the search option on this forum. Because this question has been asked many times before!

I asked a similar question not too long ago, one of the responses were to first go through all of the tuts that came with maya, then some online ones (mentioned above), then to look into a book. after taking this advice, I found that the internet is full of neverending tutorials and helpful advice. The help and tutorial files that came with the software are great also! If you prefer a book, great! otherwise I reccomend the advice given to me.
cheers!
Maya Bible. This new book is very good for you. It's clearly written, especially for a beginner.
