View Full Version : Nick's Sketchbook 2D/3D
nmcelmury 07-26-2008, 10:10 PM Hey everyone, I figured it's about time I buckle down and start a sketchbook thread to further my modeling and drawing skills when it comes to anatomy. Here's a few images to kick it off, some drawings and some ZBrush/Max stuff. I've had an Anatomy for Artists book laying around my room for about a year now so I figured I would take a stab at studying some of the subjects and translating them into 3D, also some drawings from it, and a few sketches based off images from www.charaterdesigns.com (http://www.charaterdesigns.com). Please comment and crit! Thanks!

Thanks Intervain! I've been roming these anatomy threads for a while thinking 'Damn, maybe I should start one of these....' Should have done it sooner lol. Anyways, here's a back I just brushed up, I haven't really modeled a detailed back before, it was actually a lot more challenging than I thought.

Hi Nick! Welcome!:applause: Great start!! Your drawings are awesome! They look kinda blurry right now... Did you scan them or photograph them? Good work on the torso as well:thumbsup: About the back, it looks a bit flat to me. I think it will be helpful if you always imagine the roundness and volume of the ribcage inside while you are sculpting the torso, and try not to loose that volume. It comes easier in actual clay-modeling, because you usually have an armature with a wire-frame of some sort for the ribcage, and you just have to paste your forms around it. In digital, you have to imagine the armature inside. :D
Good going already! Looking forward to more of your work!:)

Hey Anand thanks for the warm welcome and the comments! You're definitely right about that back, I knew something looked off and you definnitely nailed it on the head. Looking at it now again I can see there probably wouldn't be room for a rib cage to hide in there anywhere (unless of course it was completely flat which I don't imagine would work to well....) And yes, I have to say it is nice being able to work with an armature which is a luxury we don't really have in here so I guess I'll have to make due, suck it up and not be lazy haha. I'll redo the back hopefully sometime tomorrow and see if I can get a better more dimensional result. Thank for the crit and advise!
Oh, and yes, I snapped pictures of my sketches with my cam, thats probably why theyre so blurry, I need to invest in a scanner :)

Hi Nicholas !! :)
It's a nice start here
like your sketches very much, I think you have good command over shading and detailing is also sharp.
that torso study is beautiful too, Anand has a very good point over there about ribcage.
keep the updates coming . . . :bounce:

Deepam - Thanks for the reply man! I appreciate the kind words :) Looks like I finally found the friendly section of the forums haha. Yes about that back, I agree as well.
I did another sculpt today of a woman's torso and here's the result I got along with a quick texture job in ZBrush and some Max renders just for fun :scream: I think the back turned out a little better on this model than on the guy, which I plan on revisiting sometime tonight because I really want to get that right. Thanks for the replies everyone!

Nice to have you aboard, and nice work! :) Would be great to see life drawings from you - are there any courses available that you could take, for instance at the community college level? That's a great way to train once you're officially out of school.

Indeed a great start!
It can be frustrating to take pictures of drawings sometimes.
But know that we know that drawings look a lot better in real life than they do on a picture :)
They look nice already

Anandpg - thanks man! thats very encouraging coming from you!
RebeccaK - Thanks for the welcome :D I'm sure I'll get plenty of great advise and feedback from all the talented artists around here and hopefully gain some new knowledge and techniques! I'm sure there are a few colleges or studios around here, I live about a hlaf hour north of NYC, I was looking at going to some life drawing classes at a place called 'Spring Studio' downtown, it's a pay per session deal with live models and such, I just havent been able to get down there since my weekends have been so packed!
NR43 - Thanks! And yeah, taking pictures of pictures, what a pain in the arse lol. Thanks for the comment!
Hopefully I can post again tonight if I find sometime between burning some demo reels and printing some resume's for Siggraph! :buttrock:

Hey Nick! Good start on the head!
I thought it might be helpful for you to have a look at Joel Mongeon(plunq)'s sb thread:
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=200&t=473361
He has made several 3d studies of the individual facial features, which I think is a very effective way of practising portrait sculpture.
Keep up the good work!

I'm quite impressed with your work on expressions ( ' x ')b Very vivid - putting the life in life drawings, heh. Even in the 3D face you're working on. Keep it up!

Hey guys thanks for the replies!
Anandpg - Thanks for the link to that thread! I had totally forgotten about it, those would be some great excercises to do. I agree, that would be a great way to practice, I'l have to give it a go :)
magtataho - thanks!
Got most of my modeling done, started on some texturing, still have some funkiness with her eyes and her teeth and a couple jaggies on her ears

Yipes it's been a while, had a great time out at siggraph so now back to the grind! I've been working on a model for this months hardcore modeling challenge so most of my free time has been spent on that. Here's some WIP images of it. It's Stan Winston's Pumpkinhead. I haven't really done much creature modeling or sculpting so this has been a lot of fun. I still have some work to do on his hands and on his back. Not to mention texturing and all that fun stuff. Just wanted to share :)

Yikes that was quite the absence, been quite the year, new jobs, moving from the north east to the southwest, busy busy!
Anyways, got a little time this weekend to start something new (and hopefully finish it :hmm:)
One of my favorite movies is Event Horizon, and the "Weirbeast" in the end did nothing less than scare the crap out of me, so I figured I would take a stab at making one myself.
Been using ZBrush for everything but the base mesh and render (which im doing in max).
Sorry it's a little graphic, but hey its mainstream right?
I'm still not 100% happy with it right now, I want to rework his hand since it's a little....well..off. That and I realized after I popped off the render, he's missing his nipples, which is no good lol.

Just a couple of doodles from tonight, got the itch to do a little scratching in Photoshop. No real direction, just kind of started drawing lines and a couple faces ended up coming out of it :) I definitely need to brush up on my drawing skills, I've been lazy about it for a little too long..

Also here is my finished 'Weirbeast' for the time being, I was planning on uploading it to my portfolio but I think they are still down for maintenance or something  Anyways, here it is :)

Hey Nick, love the pumpkinhead, did you see your post up on the forum blog? :)
That last creature is crazy scary... :D but I think that's the intended effect. ;)
Edit - oh, you're right, the servers are experiencing chronic wigginess, I'm not sure when they'll be stable but I haven't been able to upload anything either.

Hey thanks Rebecca :) And yeah I just saw the post today, and I meant to thank you for that, so thank you :)
I wanted to finish up that Pumpkin head model but sadly, I lost the files right before I moved, so that kinda bummed me out.
And yes, he is meant to be scary hehe, that guy scared the hell out of me in Event Horizon so I figured I would take a stab at making him :)
And btw, thanks for the Bill Perkins notes, it was good reading on my lunch break today

Hey, no problem :) what a bummer about your files! But I'm sure you'll be doing lots of cool stuff in the future to make up for it...I know the feeling though.
Ha, glad you liked the Perkins notes! Incidentally the location of the lecture was San Bernardino, where there was a 4.5 earthquake which I felt (very briefly) here in the OC. Welcome to LA. ;)

Hey Nick,
That's a pretty amazing study! Looks like you're putting your weekends to good use. :)
If I had any crits I'd make the subjective comment that her ribs appear a touch sharp, and maybe the hands and feet might be a tad bigger. Other than that it's looking pretty great!
It's too bad about the scanner, do you have a camera? Epson scanners have always worked best for me, you can probably get one for around $2-300 but these days you might even be able to find a better deal (http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/BuyEpson/ccProductCategory.jsp?oid=-13268&ref=r0302EWb4B&s_kwcid=epson%20scanner%7C770362680&gclid=CMOFk6_f35gCFRIcawodsHGJcw) than that.

Oops, sorry about that! I threw a direct link from my blog up, it must not work :hmm:
I'll just attach one :)
Rebecca - Thanks for the comment and crits! That seams to be one of my toughest challenges is getting hands and feet to be the right size, they always end up a little too small. Thanks for pointing that out, you're totally spot on with that. And now looking at it I would definitely say her ribs are a little too sharp around the front, I'll have to tone those back :)
Thanks for the link too BTW, I'll have to pick one up with my next paycheck, I have a bunch of sketches piling up from the past month and no way to post them since my camera broke, which sucks! lol.
