Hey everyone,
I was burning a cd, but the burner kept on going after Nero showed the cd to be finished allready. I waited for about 5 minutes after which I terminated Nero, and restarted the computer. However, after i did this, all the boot up text (bios version, ram, gfx card name,etc..) was scrambled and distorted. The system loads up but it freezes when i start working in either photoshop or Maya. What causes this to happen? It can't be the way I terminated the program and forced the burner to stop, can it? This pc is not connected to any networks or internet, so i doubt it's a virus or anythign like that.

Specs :

Running Win2000 sp2
Amd xp 2400
A7nXdeluxe, 512 ddram, geforce 4200ti softquadroed to 780 xgl
WESTERN DIGITAL CAVIAR WD800BB 80GB UA100
Aopen 48x cdr (sucky, I know...)

I've seen hardware completely destroy the operating system through an improper shut down or program termination ... I would recommend a format to see what will happen .... that is a pretty low end burner... *sigh* g'lucks.

Well singularity, the new install hasn't changed anything--text is still scrambled, and everythihng else is starting to mess up as well. Can someone tell me how to reinstall the BIOS? I really have no clue where to start. I've since thrown out the cdr, and ordered a new Plexwriter 48x ($96), which should be here tomorrow.

eh, u can't really "restore" it... but u can flash it. =) Go to the manufacturer's website of ur board and go download their latest flash update, run the boot, and let it do its thing .... but be warned, sometimes this doesn't help. Try resetting the BIOS before u do anything else. Usually this can be done by setting a jumper real quick or removing the CMOS battery. In any case, if that doesn't work, that cheap CD writer might have fried some of the internals of ur board... feedback loops happen... that would be a very BAD thing...

k, i reset the cmos battery, but i only get scrambled text whenever the pc starts up (uses the hard drive) > it's ok now in the very beginning of the boot, but messes up horribly when windows loads up.. So, i what should i do now? Get a new hd ?

may sound a bit extreme but getting a new mobo isnt that exspensive about same as ur new cdr drive

Have you tried taking all you hadware including the cd drives off, and starting with just a graphics card and a hard drive and a floppy?

How long did you have the CMOS batteries out? For some systems the batteries have to be out for as much as 2 days.

goodluck

its not graphix card as they burnout completly rather than get corrupted , the only thing that could appear to corrupt ur graphix card is bad drivers :surprised

thanx for ur suggestions guys, but i tried absolutely everything, and decided to send it back for service... it'll take about a week to find out what the hell messed up.
