I've found that when using refraction - raytrace in my scenes causes serious lag time in my render. Is there any way to lower the amount of time it takes to render this?

raytracing is a slow process so there's not that much you can do, some thins to consider is the amount of ray bounces, taking it down to 1 or 2 will help but then it will return the colour or environment you have set. Rendering>Raytrace settings, play around with the depth and cut off. if you have Antialaising on, this will dramatically slow down the render but depending on the scene you might have to have it on.

hope these tips help _Jay:)

Maybe you could try not using raytraced refraction. Standard material. Reflect/Refract map type in the Refraction slot, check the Automatic checkbox, adjust the IOR in the Extended Params rollout. A lot faster, if not as accurate.

other options include:

1) buy a faster computer

2) buy a 3rd party raytracer, as max's raytracer isn't as fast as many newer 3rd party rendering packages' raytracers.
