Can anyone shed light on this?
I bring an object into Bodypaint and look at it in top view. The view in the left hand window is fine - as expected. When I look at the UV's in the right hand texture window, set to frontal projection, they are always squashed horiziontally... why?
Try it with a standard cylinder.
