Whenever I see CG shows on TV series I can never get into it because of the bad animation. On this movie, when I watched it, I forgot I was watching CG and just enjoyed it. :) Very nice work.
Too bad he didn't swing on the rope.. I was looking forward to that. ;)

Hi john, well finally finished huh! For a piece of student work this is really outstanding. Your film (and Darren Rodriguez of course) stands out from all of the other films this year at the school because of your natural feel for pace, timing and weight. One of your other main strengths is your enthusiasm to learn and your ability to push yourself beyond your limits. You're also a pretty nice guy.
Ok no time to get weepy now, but Its been great to work with you over the last three years. I wish you all the best for your career and considering you've only just turned 22, there's a long way to go. All I ask is we keep in touch and also the next festival we go to, you do something about your snoring.
Cheers John, and Dal if you're reading this, get your film on asap, I'm confident it'll go straight to the front page.

Hi John,
That is great you managed to finish it in time.
Very good work, I hope you get a prize or something on the University competition. :)
So what's gonna be our next project now :) ?
and a quick comment to E=mc2:
All the character design and modeling was made by John, I have just made a couple of other models (tires, rocks and so on) to help him to finish the animation in time. So all the claps should go to John.! Good work again Mate. :applause:
and a Hi to Paul also (Sinbad), of course I'm reading it :)

not bad
Theres some really nice facial animation on the green dude at the begging and end. I really get a sense that this guy feels like the under dog. That's some good empathy! Who can't relate to that!?
The false start gag works nicely too....
Good luck with the whole job hunting thing,

icky: Thanks Buddy, well I i'm quite supprised, cause the face rigg i made was actually out of bones. Have you tryed animating with bones for the face b4? Well it's a pain in the Butt. BUt you get some really nice spontanious stuff!
keithlango: One step at a time! hehe well i'm actually working on a story now. It's so important isn't it? There no point in having the best animation in the world animation with out a good story right? I'm also looking forwardto yours! esp with Arslan and Jason working along side you!! Very nice stuff keep me updated Keith! You on Msn or ICQ?

  wow great work!!
lol
Can't believe i just seen this thread, I been Partying too hard
So many cool things on this film man, animation is as smooth and excelently paced as anything i seen, so many subtle animation going on both facially and in general movements. It looks good, and plays perfectly, what else could you possibly ask for.
But i been hearing some rumours that you been working on this animation since you were 10!! Come on John is that true? if it is, then man your just soooo lame... :scream:
Nah, I've never tried bones for facial stuff. I imagine it could be pretty powerful if set up well. Possibly a huge slider set-up would be needed for easy control?? How many bones did you use in the face?

Wow..Ive been waiting for this since I saw your demo reel..awesome work!
How long did this take you?
Apparently it took John 12 years to make this!! plus an exra few years for character design etc... I wish i could work that fast one day:rolleyes:
John Lee
05-30-2003, 08:40 AM
amphex: Well the school i'm at we have 9 mouths to produce an animtion film mostly by our selves. Not in teams. So your prabably thinking man this is way to long for any animation? But the truth is doing 90% of everything in my film. e.g. from story to animation to final rendering takes a bloody long time LOL. And i was working on this project everyday at least 8 hours a day. Are you on a similar course?
THanks man for the feedback

Hey James
Thanks for coming to the 3rd year show i couldn't believe there were so many people there. To be honest i was really nervous that My film started the whole show my group film. Was so nerve racking actually I was shaking. And I was anxiouly waiting to see weather people would clap at the end. When they did i was so relieved. Man next year you bet i will be there i will be some one from ther industry that will actually turn up! Darrens stuff kicked ass as well. I loved it actually he's got a post on cg talk. Lincoln school of art and design is starting to get a name for itself with all the students producing some class stuff! But it was all down to them! LOL!!
Thank man

One of the most proffesional and entertaining pieces our Universities ever seen. The character animation is superb and your attainment of a job is nothing less than you deserve. Your work just keeps improving and you've shown everyone what can be achieved with CGI. Keep it up and well done,

Hey John--
I enjoyed watching this piece through its progess with the teaser, demo reel, all the way to the finished video. You have a promising career ahead of you in the fields of animation.
Great piece of work you got there. I love the animations and facial expressions. And the concept was good as well, something alittle different than what you normally see.
My only complaint would be the sound of the animation, needs improving, but still a great piece.
Awesome work and i can't wait to see more of it in the future.

The animation is excellent, John. The robot warming up in the beginning made me laugh. Great work!
I couldn't help wondering if you happened to get the inspiration of the robot from a Photoshop painting I did in 2000 though.

Hah that's pretty nice stuff :). I liked the beginning the most, with their interaction and such. I think they emote the best there. The animation is certainly technically very well animated, the rendering-style is rather cheap-like and ough-looking in certain areas, though overall it comes off nicely. I understand the nine months are limiting and I completly agree to downprioritizing the rendering-quality, it's just that I think it could proabably've been done without the result looking.. well.. bad in some places. An example would be seeing the inside of his mouth lit up the way it is in certain scenes, it just screams "CG".
Anyway, all things considered I like it, and the animation really is very nicely pulled off. Funny stuff for sure. My main crit, or ponderment, or question or whatever, is what's the story about? What's the source of the false start? I've looked through the start a few times and I can't see them doing anything wrong.. or I'm missing the point? To me it felt like they, and thus me, had gone through all that trouble only to have it not matter. The morale seemed to built up towards the somewhat dimwitted guy winning despite being outclassed, but the twist-ending changed that around. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for moving away from clichés and trite conclusions, but it felt like they'd just wasted their time with all that running.. maybe once it continues (I believe a sequel was mentioned in this thread) it'll make perfect sense.
