It came to me that in two more monthsI will be enlisted in the army and having lurked around and not completing any art I must at least finish up one piece of artwork and a 3D model before enlistment.

the first version. basic shading and colouring

progressing further and unsure of what really to do

continuing on...I began to feel the colouring was boring and feels dead, so I did a complete re-paint and did a overhaul.

Looks like the part in the hair doesn't line-up with the position of the head.

The strap going across her chest doesn't look like it's following her contours.

The skin tones you were working with earlier made more sense to me... now it's looking a bit olivey.

You could stand to desaturate the image overall... it's just full on 100% saturated... which is fine if that's what you want to make work.

The hands and forearms look small and the feet look big... the shoulders are a bit broad and undefined

the highlights are mismatched

I have a general feel of what you are doing with the lighting but it's not clear enough.

Hope that helps some.... good luck with finishing it before enlistment

I have NO idea where you are going with your lighting. It's awful. You have a light source shining from the side on one leg, from the top on the other leg, from somewhere near her shaded inner thigh onto the crotch, from above onto her shoulders, from the side for her face, and the strap across the chest is illuminated by her right breast, which looks to be illuminated from her left forearm above and in front of it...

GAH!
Pick ONE light source as your main illumination, and stick to it! Draw directional lines on your paper if you need to, but work, and work hard on being consistent.

Anatomy is passable, except for the teeny hands. Hands are the same size as the head in length, and are as wide as the tip of the nose to the bottom of the chin.

gravidengine: bodies are not really my strong points yet, still trying to practice with heads using Andrew Loomis books as guides, and yes I am still on one book

cyberGFX:I have alot of problems wiht lighting since this is my first attempt at trying to light, I even did a quick 3D render but I think It just confuses me even more. I think I need to study more paintings as well as practice more.

You are on a very good way, but learning to shade on such complex forms as human body is, is demotivating. Go from simpler to more complicated, first try mate surfaces with single light source and single shape. Try to feel the form and imagine the whole situation as if you can walk around your object and feel it's 3D nature(that is definitely easier on basic geoforms). Scott Robertson has fantastic tutorial on this at Gnomon workshop. So be patient, the good thing is you will allways be better with any new drawing/painting >;)

PS : I am not good at shading, it's long run to have it as a natural skill, you have to observe things around you a lot.

I have/had the same problem (look here (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=31&t=573089&highlight=dragon+rock), here (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=31&t=587163&highlight=UNBORN)or here (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=31&t=569117&highlight=sad+dragon)- I had the same issue but CYBR & Hecartha helped me a lot to understand).
I also did a quick rendering but the problem was I shaded each part of the body as it was one single object.
But like HECARTHA showed me you have to think more global. So look at your character as one object which is lightned from a main lightsource.
It is very hard for the beginning but after a while you'll get use to it.
I still have problems with this but keep going and it will develope!
