View Full Version : MR Displacment Approximation Clipping
Hello,
I would like to understand why my displacment is being clipped at 0.25 (length setting via displacment approx node).
can some explain why and propose a solution. I'm not using a Surface Approx on the plane, juse displacment approx.
Thanks
Fess

The mental ray approx settings look fine. Maybe the bounding box needs to be scaled up under the Displacement Map rollout of your shape's attributes? Scale it on Y only so it is not overly big and wasteful of memory and speed.

In the attribute editor you'll actually see a button that says "Calculate Bounding Box Scale." Very useful.

Im not sure if this will helps, but there is a "override maximum displce" into the shape attributes on the mental ray tab... may you can override the 0.25 value wherever it is.
By the way, im tring to use displacements in MR, but i dont know how... i would like to conect a texture file as a displacement map for a mia_material, but i cant find where or how to do it.
I can't even find the DisplaceApprox utility you are talking about.

Tempus, MentalRay is a science in its own right. Start simple and understand it or risk profound fustration.

Shawn, thanks for the tips, I'll look into it.

I might actually scale the bounding box in all directions. In my tests on a plane with displacement values in a map between 0-10, my bounding box ended up scaled 20, 20, 20.
If I just scaled Y, I got strange results, and I'm not sure why. Ignore that then :)
I'm positive this is your problem though. Select your geo, open the attribute editor and find the displacement setting. Scale it up 2x on or more (or use calculate bb button like I said- only works on maya materials though, so switch off of mia or miax temporarily if your using that).

Yep, that did the trick. I'll archive this issue for the future. Thanks!
