CGTalk - Boolean operations?

Hi all!
Can you help me about boolean operations in max 5.1?
I have to use the "EDIT NAMED SELECTION" menu, ok, but I can't activate the operations buttons in this menu!
Have I to convert the two abjects A and B in a particular type?

Hope someone can help me.
