This is a matte painting I'm working on to put on my visual effects reel. I'm really trying to spend a lot of time and attention to the overall composition of the piece.

If any of you feel like dropping a line with some words of wisdom or advice, I'd be very much obliged. I love seeing all the amazing work here on cgtalk, keep it up guys!

Thanks a lot. I just start off by doing small thumbnails (ususally doing 3-4 and choosing the best one) and then start doing tonal studies digitally. Once I'm satisfied with the overall colour and composition, I start to refine everything a little more. Here, unfortunately, the colour isn't yet working for me so I'm going to try something a little different today...maybe push the things in shadow into more blues and greens? I didn't initially intend for this to be monochromatic.

We'll see what I come up with. Thanks again for your comments. Stay tuned!

Thanks a lot :)
Good luck with your color choice !
I'm always wondering...why my colors come out illuminated...far away from reality contrary to yours...mine are always cartoonish

Hey everybody,

does anyone have any critiques or suggestions they could share with me on this number? I really want the composition to be strong and I'd appreciate any insights.

Thanks,

domo
