Hi guys, just wanted to share this with you. It's something I did last year as a private project, and I thought it was about time that I should show somebody! It's not perfect but I'm pretty pleased with it.

You can see the full animation of this at my website here:

http://www.andynicholas.com/thezone/index.php?area=gallery&subject=movies&page=1

where you can also find a complete shot breakdown.

The animation is also included in my showreel which you can find here:

wow nice work man. I especially love the comp, it really looks good and pretty real too. The sound isnt quite in sequence though.

that's really cool work. Overall it looks very realistic. I think there's not enough occlusion on the bottom of the tires and on the road where it meets the ground. :applause:

Thanks for your comments guys.

Entangle, you said the sound isn't quite in sync, which part did you mean? Can you be more specific?

Eric, yeah fair comments, I noticed the other day that the shadow around the wheels could have been slightly darker. Well, that's one more render pass then! ;)

Very nice work!, can you tell us wich soft did you use for the
camera matching?

And (if itīs posible) a brief description about how did you animate the mitsubishi, the animation looks very realistic!

Hi Nosepick, I didn't actually use any camera matching software, cause I didn't shoot the backplate live. It's just a single hires image and the camera moves were put on after - mostly in After Effects.

As far as the animation of the 4x4 goes, it was just done by hand and a lot of tweaking. I've got a degree in Physics so I did find that it helped a little when trying to figure out the behaviour of the car. I used lots of dummy objects to split up the motion of the car body as much as possible (including having a dummy object at the front so that I could easily adjust the amount of oversteer that was apparent). The wheel positions were animated using a plugin which I wrote for Lightwave to calculate the position where they hit the road. The wheel rotation was done by another plugin I wrote.

Incidentally, I'm on the lookout for freelance work at the moment. So if anyone needs anything like this or other work doing (artwork or programming), then contact me via my website at www.andynicholas.com.

I've just written a tutorial for anyone who's interested, on how I set up the lighting for this scene in Lightwave. You can find it here:
