View Full Version : ENVIRONMENT/SCENE: The Mines of Moria
chadtheartist 05-28-2003, 02:11 PM Hello ladies and gentlemen,
This is my first post of art on this fine forum, and I wanted it to be good! Let me explain why I did this piece. About two years ago I saw a movie called the Fellowship of the Ring. Cool movie, IMO, and really cool art! Watching this movie told me that I needed to pick up on this 3D stuff and start adding it to my 2D illustrations. Thus, me and my trusty Mac, went on a year long search for the elusive and alluring 3D program. What to buy, which one would be the best for me, etc... Then Alias|Wavefront did something that made me a very happy person. They dropped the price of Maya complete and behold, now I was in business. Well, so I thought until I actually got into the program! It's taken me months to figure out what I can and can't do (still learning by the way). But I think I've reached a point to where I can start experimenting with my current abilities.
OK, without further ado, here is my art piece, consisting of 3D and 2D elements, and a pretty powerful light staff! I hope you enjoy this as much as I have.

great, I can't tell which part is 3d and which is 2d...consider for yourself if that's good or bad ;)
The only comment I have is that the Hobbits are too small, they are a lot smaller than Gandalf, but in your picture they're less than half his size:eek:

That's cool, the 3D and 2D stuff fit well together. It took me a while to realize that the light in the back was the Balrog. If you're going for an uneasy impending doom kind of feeling like the movie had, I don't think you got it. The light from the staff is way too bright and overpowers the light comming from the back, to the point where I didn't even notice it. I say either loose the Balrog light, or dim down the staff, it looks a little confused having both in there. I really like the style of the picture and how you blended everything so well.

Thank you both for responding. I also thank you for the critiques. They are appreciated.
I see your point E.Z. Schwartz, but I don't really know what else to do with what you're saying. If I dimmed the staff light, I'd loose the focal point. If I removed the light from the Balroq, then I would loose all the pillars in the distance. I do think I need to change the way the light is reflecting on the pillars from the Balroq. If I toned that down maybe that would help it.
Thanks again for the responses. :D

Well, I don't think you really need to loose any light, but to help differentiate you could make the fellowship's light blue and the Balrog's light red perhaps ? But I kinda like the use of colour at the moment anyway...

A very good compositing  . I like everything in it: the light, the painting, the rendering ...

Thanks alot folks! If you like this one, wait till you see what I'm working on next. I'll give you a hint, the title of the piece is "Footsteps of the Giant".
This one is going to be good!

Looks very cool. I like the effect of mixing the 2d and 3d, never seen anything quite like it before. very immpressive.

Thanks again for the compliments. Looking back at this I guess it's kinda cheesy as a concept. I'll try and do something a bit more exciting next time.
As a side note, I tried working on footsteps of a giant, and right now I'm not ready to go that far into 3D. It's tough trying to figure out what to model and what not too. And my concepts are lame, so there really isnt anything to go from.
Anyway, I hope to post more work soon. I don't know what it will be, but hopefully it will be pretty neat. :D

That's a fascinating combination of 2D and 3D, and it works really well too
It reminds me of the look that Treasure Planet and Titan AE had. The colours you have used are really nice too, and it's cool to see that you created your own mood instead of copying it from the film (which was graded blue).
The only (rather nitpicky) crit that I really have to add is that this scene takes place in the ruined city of Dwarrowdelf, which is a Dwarven city, and the columns are a little too organically shaped for Dwarven builders (who generally stick to angular geometric shapes according to the books) and the glyphs you've got carved in the walls are not really Dwarven style - again, the Dwarven runes are angular. But that's just being a bit nitpicky, because I am a huge Lord Of The Rings fan :)
But a really cool piece overall, great work!
Oh, and welcome to the forum, chadtheartist - it's always great to see new, talented artists here. Looking forward to seeing your next piece (sounds intriguing!), and I hope you enjoy the forum as much as the rest of us do :D

this is a bit nitpicky as well, but the cracks in the columns are obviously painted on there and that kills the effect totally.

Yeah, I did zero research with this piece. I read the LOR trilogy... about 15 years ago so I really don't remember a whole lot from the books. You're right about me not taking the designs from the movie, because I really didn't like the lighting scheme from the film. But that's not saying it wasn't good, I just wanted something different.
I appreciate your comments as well. I have much respect for you, and your willingness to share information. You actually helped me out on this piece because of your texturing tutorial, which is very, very good.
Thanks. :D
PS: I'm a big Wheel of Time fan myself, and oddly enough, I've never done any WOT artwork. Maybe that will be my next work? I dunno.
