I've been trying to wrap my head around the best way to piece together a good reel. Any ideas or examples would be great. Even better if someone got a job Texturing/Surfacing at a studio and is willing to show off the reel that got them in. Don't need to know the stuido.

Thanks

Maybe I don't know enough about the definitions of different jobs within the field but...

I would say if you take a look at the typical shading and lighting reel, it will give you a good idea of what to do. Because generally a shading and lighting reel deals heavily with textures and you can't show of your texturing skills without good lighting.

This depends on what industry you're trying to break into. If you're wanting to get into games, then don't worry about "surfacing" (which I understand to mean shaders), and if you're wanting to get into film, that largely applies too (ie don't worry about shaders, just focus on the texture creation). If you're wanting to get into TV commercials or such, you'll probably want to show some surfacing.

A texturing reel should show a variety of subjects, organic and hard surface, fully textured. They don't necessarily have to be expertly lit (you could simply use a basic GI set up or something similar), although a few "finished" shots wouldn't go amiss. Many studios also want to see actual texture sheets, so you should include shots of your maps in your reel, and maybe even include a few full PSD files (watermark them if you're worried about them getting nicked) along with your reel when you send in an application.
