I was just wondering what you all thought on this matter...
I realize that in order to be a successful artist of any kind you have to have a good understanding of basic art concepts such as human anatomy, perspective, etc... But do you need to be a good painter or is sketching good enough? Im taking into account that a good painting has a good sketch underneath it, but say you already understood color theory pretty well, could you just be a great pencil artist? Would that suffice if I wanted to ultimately become a good 3D modeler or character designer?

Thanks for any input!

There are a lot of great comic book artists who rock at drawing but suck at painting. I think what you want depends on what you'd like to accomplish. Being able to paint and having masterd colors, the lighting, surface quality, and colors in your 3D work will benefit greatly. Of course painting is not the only way to learn those things--afterall it's the understanding of underlining theories that help you improve. Painting simply forces to you learn them whether you like it or not, and it forces you to master them, whereas in 3D you often just let the renderer do all the work and you end up not being forced to learn anything.
