ok... plain and simple, im trying to understand how UV editing works. I got the basics of it... but when it comes to this model I have now, im just plain lost. I have attached a zip file containing the .c4d file and a jpg image of the model. im tryin to at LEAST get a good displacement map going..once thats done i believe i can do the rest. Hopefully my model is made well and someone can help me out. Thanks in advance.

Nice looking model with a clean mesh. Shouldn't be any problem UVing it.

But.. as it's a C4D file, have you considered asking in the C4D forum? Cinema comes with Bodypaint, which is ideal for this, but has a more than averagely steep learning curve (well, it was for me!).

Secondly, that looks like a mesh that was smoothed in a hypernurbs but there's now only the high poly version left. Presumably you still have the low poly model? It's far easier to map that than the smoothed version.

I have receently started texturing in cinema 4d, I was using 3ds max before. Maybe this will help. Start by taking your mesh and laying out the faces within your canvas properly. Select polys along the seams of your texture and project them. It looks like you already found that parameter to map them the way they are in your file. I always find it helpful to temporarily apply a checkboard texture to see if there is any pulling on your vertices. As far as the displacement map goes, you will have to create a grayscale texture, because white displaces and black doesn't. (You can apply the displacement in the positve or negative direction). It helps to blur it or have gradients in your map so it isn't harsh. Remember that a displacement map actually changes the mesh, so if there aren't enough polys, it will not displace correctly. (A bump map just gives the appearance of depth). There is a setting in c4d for subpoly displacement which can fix this, but it can take forever to render.
