Well I was really disappointed with the CG humans in Reloaded so I thought I'd have a crack at making something using loads of cloth and wrinkles (the Matrix characters clothes were curiously wrinkle free). Ended up looking like a cross between Neo and Hellraiser. I'll be adjusting it to play down these influences (more cloth pieces over right shoulder, hair, etc)

Here's the first view (colours tweaked in pshop,no textures yet).

Nice modeling! I do agree about the clothing on the reloaded models....but who can really complain about the two semis colliding hehehe ;)

I'd say he looks a lot a lot like kevin spacey :scream:

whoah ... i love the wrinkles. I would love to see the wireframe view. If you add to many wrinkles, wouldn't that create some problem when animating the character ? I guess that will just depend where you put your wrinkles on your mesh.

Thanks for the responses, everyone.

dur23 - I swear I didn't use any of Kevin on this model. He's becoming quite the albatross around my neck. :D

p0lym0rph: Dammit. that's exactly what I was trying not to do. Oh well. Must try harder. ;)

walee: will post wires tonight when I get home.

That's cool Sas

I like the form a lot, very nice style. Defintely an improvement on those crap characters in Reloaded

Oooooh don't lie :shame: Hehehe or else you sure will end up like that Ancient Mariner... or perhaps not hehehe.

Kevin Spacey IS Neo Soze in USUAL SUSPECTS RELOADED :p

If that's not Kevin, then you spent too long looking at his pic doing your other model, before making the new guy :D

Seriously though, he's looking very cool, always dig the future medieval type crossover garb, and the wrinkles look great.

Though I agree some kind of extra design or cut might help make it a bit less skirt-like and more monky (is that a word?). Not entirely sure what the jacket is made out of..on the body seems more clothlike, but the arms are sort of a leather impression. like at the cuffs seems very thick and molded instead of thin and bunched up. Makes me think of the Rocketeer. :)

Anyway, preach on..look forward to more.

The head and neck seem really large to me. Nice drapery though :D What kind of reference did you use when placing the wrinkles? Or do you just have really good knowledge of "wrinkle anatomy"? I always have a hard time knowing where to paint the wrinkles on textures for my game characters. Planning on buying Dynamic Folds and Wrinkles (or similar title) by Burne Hogarth, but any other reference you can recommend would be great.

Mmm.. Like that curvaceous figure.. The voluptuous hips.. The swaying dress. I'm..so..confused.. :surprised:

Nice folds tho. The clothing looks like it has SSS added to it.

Thanks for all the comments, you lovely cgtalk people. And a front page! Brace server for impact. Much thanks to whoever plugged that.

Here's an update on the face (no more Kevin comments after this, I think ;) )

I'd agree with the comments about the cuffs. The way they sit and their volume just looks a bit too thick; almost like they are somehow inflated. I get/got the impression from the coat neo wore in the film, that the cloth itself was kind of floppy. ..

First of all, it looks great! The clothes, the face and the rest of the head looks totally sweet. However, there is something about the hands that i think doesn't look right. Maybe they are too flat or something. I don't know, maybe post a few close-ups with more angles of the hands so we can see them better?
But still, it all looks great :)

UnlikelyCorny
05-29-2003, 12:42 PM
Did not see the hands till you mentioned it, but then....
I actually think I preferred the Kevin Spacey look..What was wrong with that?

Is there a particular plan with model?

Would love to see it move...

Great Model, however there is a minor problem with the base of his hands i think, judging by his size and frame, they should be thicker towards the top of the palm and size down towards the fingers.

As far as the Matrix cg characters, I thought they could use a few wrinkles and heavier skin imperfections, but what was done in the scene with the Smiths still stands as my favorite cg fight.

It's a great STILL, however you problem was with the CGHumans in reloaded, this is not moving, it's still in it's bind pose without textures. Somehow i think your wrinkles would lose there tasteful feel when rigged, and animated. I'm sure the company could blow you away with one of their stills, but that's apples and oranges.

Make it move and impress people.

Wow, lots of replies. OK, here goes:

thedaemon: Clint? That's fine with me.

Mattrne: Yeah yeah, ok, the cuffs are too thick. Now do some work (disclaimer: Matt sits about 2 metres away from me at Sony, so I'm not just ragging on some random stranger)

DSedov, Julez4001, kRabATh: thanks for the support

Nov@: I can't promise any further Matrix-influenced stuff (it's not what I'm really going for). Software-wise I used Maya and Photoshop for colour tweaks.

SirManfred, UnlikelyCorny, cgwolf: you're both so right about the hands; will tweak them tonight. As for the Kevin Spacey look? If you weren't around September last year, this is what everybody's been moaning about (blimey, it's dated pretty badly now I look at it again):

Link (http://infinitevertices.20m.com/spac%20head%20copy.jpg)

J. Epp: Be careful what you wish for.... stay tuned.

:D

Big thanks to Ambient Whisper for the plug: I know all this art stuff shouldn't be about self aggrandisement, but being on the front page is a big honour and feels pretty damn good :D. Thanks again.

Mr Epp, you should check out the models on www.digitalsculptor.net, they have similar wrinkles and hold up pretty well after rigging in Squares movies...

Anyway, he looks pretty damn cool to me. Glad you got rid of the 'spacey' cheek lines, and have to say I'm not a big fan of his skirt - but it does suit the style. Only other comment would be that the creases appear a little 'sharp', I understand that his jacket is very figure hugging, but it looks to me as though the definition is too tight...?

Now make him kill things with pointy sticks! :wip:

the Matrix characters clothes were curiously wrinkle free

That was probably done on purpose to lend to the atmosphere of everything being artificial.

Oops, sorry hellwolve. Been a long day stuck in a mocap harness. Apologies for missing you out. So too much like a long skirt? That's because basically it is a long skirt. I'm less worried about what to call it and more worried about how to get the damn thing to solve properly :D .

ZVAN: the top half's modelled, and the bottom half is Maya cloth.

hakkston and mhunt: ta very much

Googlo: that's a valid point, but for some reason it just jolted me out of what was otherwise total immersion in a pretty good movie. I know, I know, people in CG are too picky about this stuff :D

You're gonna have to put up with the skirt Hellwolve, at least until I get so frustrated with the cloth dynamics that I throiw the whole thing out the window :)

Wow... that's really amazing. Looks like a nice villian-like character to have in The Matrix. Personally, I wasn't really impressed with the Twins or the vampire guards. (Vampires?? meh.) This guy actually looks intelligent and capable of holding his own mentally and physically, instead of that coward Merovingian. I dunno how much work you'd need to do on the clothing... I think one of the style points of the Matrix clothing is simplicity.

I thought the wireframe looked fairly dense... was that a base poly mesh that you converted to subds (or smoothed)? At any rate, it looks great! Do you have any plans to animate him? It would be great to see another of your creations sparring with him. (Although, that's probably a lot more work than you wanted to put into it. :p)

Finally it breakes from simple polys to an actual facial structure.
Not a lot of people understand, how to put polys where they do belong. And the fact is - thats not about knowing anatomy, but about spending many hours infront of a modeler screen.
