View Full Version : Maya toon shaders
wtoddk 05-28-2003, 08:34 AM Hi all... first of all this is NOT just another Max/Maya debate....
.....read on....
Ok, so I'm unfortunately only a Max user at the moment, but am looking into doing the transfer over to Maya. I'm going to be doing an animation short, but need to do it with a nice toon shader, like Cebas' FinalToon for Max (http://www.finalrender.com/products/gallery.asp?UD=10-7888-35-788&PID=37)
My question now is, what toon shaders/renderers are there available for Maya that can do the same as FinalToon, if any?
Thanks in advance for any advice....

You can try
http://www.algorithmic.com/efx.html
BUT... not sure if they have a Maya 5 version yet.
And i heard it's not that good :(
Anyone else who can tell me otherwise ?

Maya 5 has a vector renderer which can create toon shading or you can use Mental Ray to do it.
Both don`t seem to be easy to use and as delicious as Final Render though.

One more thing I should add is that I'm hoping to find a shader/renderer for Maya that does "sketchy" type toon lines like FinalRender / FinalToon does.
Thanks....

Tomcat (http://www.toonshade.com/) is probebely your best best for that type of thing...
take a look at this (http://spyral.free.fr/toonshade/gallery/dirty.gif)
nice.

TomCat. That's what I'm talking about. It still doesn't seem to do all the line variations and shading and hatching techniques of FinalToon...but it's still really nice. Thanks....

I'm currently testing out TomCat for a future toon project and have been in contact with Patrick who makes it. He'll probably release a commercial version within a few weeks as I understood it.
Here's a test image (which is very lowrez, so hope you can make something out;)):

Great! I hope he really can have it released quickly. Please tell Patrick that we might be ready to buy a copy if it's released quickly. Nice image too!

anyone have any more work to show that they've done with TomCat? I'm really curious to see more examples of what it can do...especially with the line-rendering....

yeah, I tested an early version of the tomcat. It is one of the best things Ive seen hook into maya. If you know what paint effects can do, then you know you need to buy it. SO worth the price.
I did a few tests before when it was working only on polys. I did a dirty test, clean test with cloth, without cloth. all types of brushes. the thing was amazing. Tight ass lines on deforming geometry. And way faster than anything I had used before.
The coolest thing I found was that you can set where the lines appear based on material borders. so you can basically choose where you want the lines. Motion blur works too. It is HOT. I'm glad he released it finally. The shit is amazing. Buy it.
and no, don't work for him.
