View Full Version : stencil mask textures...
Arcon 07-17-2008, 06:25 AM i thought this would be really easy but its not working as expected.... say i have a file texture (UV mapped) which is a black area with white surround (or vice versa), i want to have a 3d fractal texture appear inside the black area. i would've thought to accomplish this i'd simply make a stencil map with fractal connected to .image, and the black & white image file as the mask. doesn't work. a semi-transparent fractal always appears in the outside areas.... i havn't done this in ages and can't remember how its supposed to go lol, tips would be cool :)

Ok, I'm asuming you have another texture or something to put into the black area of this masking. You can use a blender node in this case.
Put the outColor of the fractal into color 2 of the blender, put the other texture color into color 1. Then make the red channel from your mask and put it in as the blender attribute.
There ye go, now that I think of it, if you just leave the color 1 black, it should be a mask just fine. White should be the fractal (I think, mayas not open).

thanks for your reply but i can't get that method working.... as per my post the fractal goes inside the black area... and i just want white around the outside...
i'll try to explain the application better: basically the file texture is to be used as transparency, it has black [opaque] areas in the middle, white [transparent] around the outside. but i want some variation in the opaque area and want procedural control over it, so am using a solid fractal or volumeNoise for this. but i can't get a stencil mask to work without putting heaps of fractal transparency all over the whole texture, whereas i want it just inside the black areas of the file texture.
hope that makes sense :)

the problem was i was too tired lol.
found a much easier solution, see attached pic for shading network. totally forgot about the magic clamp node to stop the color.offSet going above 1.
