View Full Version : Vehicle: Buggy...? C&C Plz!
Krisc 05-27-2003, 11:48 PM :wavey: Hello, second post here. I don't understand Rhino's renderer so please bare with me please as I wish I knew how to do metallic surfaces...anyway, most of you saw my sword, well hopefully "most of you" but I dropped that for now since it was about half a year old (I took a break from modeling due to SAT's and stuff) and now I got a great idea in mind. Having some trouble putting on the screen, but here it is... :bounce:

I added a couple of things. Anyone have an idea about how to do a spring? I am very new and just can't think of a way! Thanks for any C&C and/or help!
btw, one note is this is all just an idea, its not modeled to scale or not modeled to look like any other vehicle...most of the things I add are "im promptu". :bounce:

I like it so far... sorry, I wouldn't know how to make a spring... wish I did...

I found out kindof, I took a curve and kept going out (concentric circle thingy). This was to make sure I could see each level of the spring...then, one by one, I raised each "level" and brought the curve into the main spring size...

Personally, I think its a pretty good modeling job, but some things leave a little to be desired...the main thing that strikes me is that if its a buggy, then it needs a lot more clearance from the ground, and more suspension travel (ie: the available distance that the wheels have to travel up and down). Right now, it looks like a go-kart with big meaty tires on it, no offence. The modeling looks great, but check out google images for reference on buggies. That is, unless this is being used for something other than off-road ;) Other than that, keep it up!

Thx for the help so far, I added shocks with springs and made some new rims for the wheels, but after I came back from dinner (I saved and shut down to let my comp cool down) and I tried to open up the file, it says it is corrupt! :thumbsdow :annoyed: :annoyed:
Is there anything I can do? I am using Rhinocerous3D 2.0
GRRR! Here is what it says:

Bummer on the corrupt file. That's happened to me several times in Maya. Just make sure that you always save different versions along the way. To make a spring... I'm not sure about Rhino but in Maya if you extrude along a path there is a rotation option. If you crank that up you can then duplicate one of the surface curves to get a helix. Then you can extrude along the new helix curve to get a spring. Or you can create a cylinder and throw on a twist deformer and then delete your history, select one of those surface curves and duplicate, the extrude along the duplicated curve. Like I said I'm not familiar with Rhino3D but maybe this will give you some ideas.

Hi again, I started from scratch but I have sent the last one in to Tech Support so he can try and get it back. But oh well if he doesn't. I am starting to make back ups hehe. Well here she is so far...I know the shocks are a bit tough to see, I am going to remake them and I will get a close up when they are done.
C&C is welcomed as usual!
btw, It is no longer a buggy, hehe, it is now a "vehicle".

This is like, turning into a journal, of course I guess it is supposed to. Anyways, it may not look big but it was a change that was needed. Shocks got a little bit of a redoing and they are now attached. The rims and tires are also different, I made the rim's cutouts bigger.
btw, anyone know how to do metallic rendering in rhino? If not I will just import it into 3dmax or something and do it from there. :( But I love rhino, lol. It is rendered in wireframe because normal rendering doesn't really show some of the things.
any thoughts? :wavey:
the file is like 16mb (My biggest file yet. I don't know how to find out how many polygons, but if someone could tell me, I will)

last update for tonight...
just remember that this is not modeled after any real car, yea I would like to keep it looking kind of the same but I am just testing with different things in Rhino, and having fun building a car. This one has part of the new chassis installed and has the curve for what the body will look like.

you're using rhino right?
use the helix command to make a curve then create a pipe around it

This thing just continually looks kewler and kewler! :buttrock:
my only thing, not really a critique, is that It looks like you have two slightly different tire design. There's one that looks a little more complex than the other. maybe I'm just seeing it wrong? BUT... if there is one... could you post a better pic of it?

Kelly

Well as for the tires...heh.
The first tire (in the first couple of pictures) was lost in the corrupt file thing that happened, so I lost everything.
So then, in the next few pictures you can see I went to more of an on-road tire...but then I noticed the rims looked ugly and needed to be bigger so I redrew the tire completely, with again new cutouts for the smaller width of the tire and bigger rim. So ya, the tires have changed, hehe.
robbo_145 -> Thanks, I will try that! (I am using Rhino2.1 or 2.0 or whatever)

I have no clue where I am going with this...this is seriously what I though in my dream though...so don't be like "WOAH! Wut is he doing!" And I am clueless on how to create the body for the car...

Okay to start, great work so far. Now then, you should always save in increments, Rhino 2.0 has this feature (1.1, which is what I'm using, doesn't) and it will save you from having to redo everything in case of a corrupt file or unexpected damage due to a crash (which rarely happens in Rhino). You should also use the SAVE SMALL button inbetween increments to help keep file sizes down. Rhino files can be large because the program saves the NURBs model and the RENDER MESH everytime you save. The save small feature clears teh render mesh from the file, cutting the size in half in many cases. Of course, the more complex your model, the larger the file will be regardless.
Since you have Rhino 2.0, if you can afford it, I'd suggest getting a copy of the Flamingo plug-in for RHino or getting your hands on RhinoMan, they will help give you better renders as they render using Raytracing and Rhino does not. However, since you're stuck with the basic renderer, like me, I will suggest checking the Object properties for your models. There you will have the option of applying a color and Rhino will even go as far as trying to make it look metalic or plastic with the click of a few buttons.
I am the moderator of the Rhino forum at Renderosity.com (http://www.renderosity.com) and if you have any specific Rhino needs, feel free to drop by and ask there. Most of the gang makes cars (with the exception of a few) and will be able to help. You'll have to sign up to enter but it's just like coming here (just more specific to a Rhino user's needs).
I've also compiled a bunch of tutorials and edu-files from the members which is accesible to the public without signing up. They can be found here (http://market.renderosity.com/~rhino/index.htm). Among them is the inital PDF series of car tuts by Y@, the CGCHAT link Robbo_145 mentioned goes to the more advanced tutorial.
IM or email me if you need anything.

Well...ok, so I took a bit of a break...like 1 month or something but I am back into it...doing the body my own way cause I guess I just want to...I don't know. Anyway, my ideas have changed somewhat and I am going for a Charger feel to it. Don't know much about cars so excuse the lame lump in the hood. I know there is a purpose to them in real cars but I thought it looked cool.

Does anyone have a metal / reflective material I can have!? I really want one!

what program are you using?
If you are using 3d Max, I have some tutorials, as well as a car paint material for download on my website: http://www.danielbuck.net

Hehe, you know, I have been following your tutorials religiously. The great part about your tutorials is that they work. Like I did the paint one, and it took like 5 minutes (after finding the Raytrace material, which you should probably mention how to get for those of us who are beginners hehe) and it was simple, i had reflective balls right in front of my eyes!
Now as to why you went and dug this up I have no clue, hehe.
I use Rhino2.2 to model and 3DS Max to render, but I've been waiting for a very good car tutorial in 3DS Max 5 to learn how to model serious things in 3DS Max. *hint hint* *cough cough* :buttrock: :wavey:
