View Full Version : First real attempt at a male body

Hello

I've been reading lots of tutorials and looking at wires of other models for the past weeks, and now I figured I'd try and make a plain ol' male body. I've never studied any anatomy or modelling (except a tiny and lousy course in 3dsmax where most of the class knew more than the teacher to start with =)

There are too many errors and anomalies that I feel is in there -but can't quite pinpoint- to mention them all =) There's also a whole bundle that I do know about but since this is still a WIP I haven't gotten around to fixing them yet. So, I'm hoping someone can help a newbie out here and point out at least the most glaringly obvious anatomical errors. This is just the second body I've made, and the first was at least in part based on that Joan of Arc tutorial and was never finished.

Thus, I would like help in at least the anatomy department =) As for the technique aspects, I've read lots about that and keep learning new things all the time so I know about for example edge loops and quads, and sadly also my lack of skill with either =)

This is done in Wings3D (man that proggy is cool =), the shaded ones also. I'm gonna export it to Max or Maya soon and do more on the subdivision level of work, i.e. focusing on getting the smoothed version to look ok rather than just the mesh like I've done so far.

Oh, and I also type WAY too long messages on messageboards ;)

Here's hoping that linking images works like I think it does... (and that it's the right forum I'm posting in to begin with =)

I haven't found much reference yet but I did find scans of one of Andrew Loomis' old books and I started adjusting some proportions after one of the images in it. Haven't gotten as far as doing anything with the back yet tho, as is obvious, still too wide to be realistic I think =) Then again I'm not aiming for complete realism, but I at least want it to look moderatley correct. This isn't a character as much as just a first exercise in anatomical modelling.

This is latest version, with some proportion changes and minor tweakings here and there. Still lots of problems I bet but it IS a WIP =)

I used pictures of myself as reference pictures when I was working on a body(actually, I'm still working on a body...)

Now this is good for getting human proportions, since nothing has more accurate human proportions than a human. Though the only response I got to my thread about it was "Gah! I hope you're not naked in that picture!", so I'd avoid posting reference pictures, even if they don't show anything nobody wants to see. =P

Also, yourself is the best source for human reference pictures, since there's nobody else who you can talk into it so easily, and there's nobody else you can direct into getting the pictures to line up absolutely perfectly if you're going for front/back/side views. Just make sure to turn your desk if you have nosy housemates. =P

Anyhoo, here's my thread so you can see how it turned out anyways. Gonna post updates once I get the hands and feet modeled:
