Hi guys.

We want to make a realistic looking Planet (Earth) from the view of a low orbit satelite. For example look at

http://www.google.de/imgres?imgurl=www.ru.ac.za/studentZONE/gallery/screenshot-earth.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.ru.ac.za/studentZONE/gallery/&h=392&w=773&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dearth%26start%3D20%26imgsz%3Dxlarge%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Dde%26lr%3D%26ie%3DUTF-8%26oe%3DUTF-8%26sa%3DN

We have a 1200x1000 Texture of earths surface, but this is not enough, cause we also wanna zoom around a bit. And for our Scene we need at least a half sphere for the Planet. So its a pretty big area to texturize. But if we get too near, the texture looks pretty bad. Are there any tricks you can prefer.
Thank you.

PS: The trick with mirrored textures isn't a good idea in our case, because it looks pretty uncool at the edges of the Planet.
