8.0/8.1 files to 7 art

theyare not compatible, actually I don't think XL 7 files can all open in ART can they? I mean they'd lose all animation information. could be wrong though

As for R8 the files cannot be backwards compatible simply because there is too much informatioon that would be loss in the files, everything from animation to simple connection between objects, really the only things that would translate would be the models. even material information would change in some areas.

if you absolutly have to, you can always export to .obj. Then you could probibly import the .obj into R7 art.
