View Full Version : Modeling: Instance mirror not working
Xilica 05-27-2003, 07:38 PM Alright, here's the scoop:
I instanced mirrored my model while in Editable Poly. Now I convert to Editable Mesh since I have to turn an edge and Editable Poly doesn't have it (if i'm wrong, let me know). Then I convert back to Editable Poly and realize my instance mirror has not updated, even while movin g it in Editable it does not update. Why won't my instance work anymore? Is that due to converting it to a Mesh?
Thanks in advance

I would say it probably is because you converted it to Emesh, but couldn't you just delete the instanced half, and then mirror it again? Also i found that using semmetry instaid of instance is so much easier, plus it automatcally welds the model together down the middle! Which saves me a ton of time and work :)

I don't recall that converting/collapsing makes an instance unique. Perhaps you pressed the "make unique" button on the modify panel?

If he converted only one half of the model then that wouldn't make the other unique? But maybe he converted both?

damn, i think i hit the 'make unique' button
i never knew of such button, well looks like i learned something new
all i did was delete my other half and then mirror again, in the meanwhile i'll make sure not to hit the 'make unique' button which i have a feeling i hit accidentally while hitting the 'show end result toggle'
thanks for the quick replys and help !

You can 'turn edges' in edit poly.
Use the re-triangulate button, and you can specify where
a poly puts it's edges ( though they don't show up
unless you connect the verts )

Converting to... breaks any instance/reference relationship, you don't have to hit "make unique" to do that.
Hi wonder if u can help me... i am done with half of my model and now wish to mirror the other side with the symmetry tool to mirror the other side, it's mirrored on the wrong axes... how can i change the axes for mirroring?
I tried another way of duplicatuing the other half using the mirror button and used composite - boolean to combine the objects, but the seam at the center of the two objects seems to be problematic when i used mesh smooth.
any ideas? thanks in advance.

The Symmetry Mod has a SubObject setting for the mirror axis.
If you choose to use Mirror instead, mirror as a Copy, Attach, then manually weld the halves together (if you leave the open verts selected before you mirror they will be selected on both halves after you attach them, meaning you should oly have to hit "weld" once).

Like Ian said, collapsing makes the object unique, unless you can use 'Collapse To'.
thanks... will try it out!
