I’d like to make an old school looking bomb (looks like a bowling ball with a candle stick sticking out of it).

I see two main ways of doing this:

1. Nurbs Sphere and Nurbs cylinder -> Boolean Union tool
2. Polygon Sphere and polygon sphere and somehow attaching them together. (I don’t know how though)

Which do you guys/gals think is the “smarter” way to go? It needs to be a single model rather than 2 parented objects too.

Think about it, people wont even notice that they are 2 separte objects once textured/shadded and if you really need to make a boolean both Nurbs and polygons are good

i tend do not do any booleans anymore, because there's so many ways to do the same geometry without any of those

I suppose you're right...One thing with parenting, how do i tell maya to move both objects as one when I translate them and rotate them so they'll have the same manipulator point. Delete History?

Group the objects delete history, and center pivot. You can grab the object as root in the outliner, or use the up arrow key before scaling to grab, and scale all at once.

I would have used nurbs for such a simple object until adding effects then I would have replicated a Poly bomb so I could use polly shatter tool/effect for the explosion.

[edit] Actually you might not even have to delete history, but it's always a good idea once you have created a new object from other multiple objects. (IMHO)

you should also check your outliner . you can find what your looking for there to select as well.
