View Full Version : problems when making the same model with nurbs, lofts,& CS ?

Guys i'm stuck in some part of a design & thinking about doing it using Nurbs or Loft or cross-section modifier. it is some sort of small glass container that consists of 2 different cross-section at the edges separated by a long space of morphing between (by morphing i mean the transition between them )

the 2 curves are attached with the thread..
my questions are :

when i draw them using splines & then converting them to nurbs..one of them is converted correctly in one complete cv curve.. but the other spline is converted to many cv curves..the overall shape is correct but the curves are separated into segments & i have to use the "join" button to join them cv by cv..this problem happens to me all the time when i convert the splines to nurbs.

about loft : i use the 2 curves with a straight line the represents the height of the shape..the result i get is a deformed jagged surface..al though the start vertices of the 2 curves are coincident & the curve flow is in the same direction (no reversing needed).

about cross-section modifier.. i thought it would be perfect but the same result like loft.. should the both splines be consisted of the same numbers of vertices ??..

sorry for my bad english..i hope my explanation is clear enough for you guys.

Howdy !

Well, first off, i'm not quite sure i fully understand you :p
Do you want to end up with a rounded, quite uniform surface ? If so, maybe you should rather use a lathe modifier ?
Saying so because if i were you i'd probably try to find another way around than using NURBS : Max does not handle them extremely well, and imho some features are .. funky : )

But if not, then maybe you could try to create the curves as cv or point NURBS curves ?

loft _should_ work perfectly for this. check and make sure the loft isn't getting twisted or something wierd like that, as thats the only reason i can think of that it might not work

I don't know if it will work, but after you draw the spline, try a normalize spline modifier (You should play with the segment lenght parameter) and then turn it into a NURB curve? You could give it a try, good luck.

thank you guys for you replies..

mouj : yes i should give it a try to draw curves with nurbs...but lathe is not what i want..

capan panic : i guess loft didn't work cause the vertices of spline wasn't drawn coincidentally.

sui : i've never used that modifier b4 ..& it worx !!.. thanks man .

maybe i'll post a pic of the model when i finish it.
