Hello CG Talkers!

I have to do a video in which a 3D object will be partially covered by a character in the real footage, which is not shot on a blue/green screen.

I just want to check if I miss by any chance an easier way to do this:

1. By rotoscoping the head back in the movie, to cover up the 3d object
2. (using 3ds max) create a Matte object in form of the head that will "hide" the 3d object.

If those 2 are my only options, very probably I'll use the first one, cause I'm not so good at modeling human heads ...

roto it is.

if you would want to create a matte in 3dsmax it'd have to be as detailed as a roto so there's no point in it

Ok to save my time i will try to track the footage (the guy) then use the tracked information in my roto or paint to cover it back. I would try rotoscoping applications to make my job faster. Motor, Silloette Roto, etc..

Just another idea, If you have a cleanplate of the background, you can difference key it. Or edge key it if its standing out.
