View Full Version : placing clones/instances in points in layout
denoise 07-14-2008, 05:12 AM Hi,
I'm making a tour video inside a cell and the human body in LW + Maxwell. One of the major challenge is placing hundreds and thousands of elements in the same scene. Currently I'm obtaining very good results using this instance power in maxwell, reducing considerably the render time (sometimes using simple geometry would be impossible).
The problem right now is that placing several clones is very time consuming and I need the ability to place clones in exact positions. Searching in this forum and the web I found FamilyCloneGN to be a perfect solution but the file on the server has gone and it's impossible to find it. The other approach would be a $300 USD script called HD Instance but I find a waste of money buying this software only for this purpose.
Is there a plug-in or a technique that allows to clone one object to every point of another object in layout ?
Thanks!

HD instance doesn't just clone objects, it instances them, hence the name. You'll soon find that cloning objects can make for very resource hungry scenes as the geometry will multiply with each object. HD instance loads just a single object and creates instances of that object at render time (afaik) greatly reducing memory usage. It also has the ability to randomly alter those instances to create variation, eg. hue and saturation changes.
Work out how much time it's taking you to place clones by hand and then work out the cost...chances are that $300 is a much cheaper option than spending time looking for cheaper alternatives and possibly sorting out render issues.

Thanks.
This time I'm using Maxwell Render, much better than HD Instance render (Ligtwave) for my purpose. I mean, spending $300 for the 10% of the use of the software... hmm.. I think it's too much, considering that there are plugins (I cannot find) for free.

you only need the version 1.8, not 2.0
version 1.8 is quite good and is only $150.

My point was that the latest version of HD Instance costs $300 which I imagine is less than you're charging per day, so spending a day looking for a different solution will cost you more than buying a plugin that can be re-used forever.
It is possible to clone within layout, I think by using FX-linker? You can assign objects to particles and you can generate particles from an objects surface so there's a possibility there...but you'll still hit the problem of having many clones within the scene which HD instance won't.

I really appreciate your answer, but I guess I'm charging less (I guess I should move to the UK). Anyway, Maxwell is doing a great job managing clones with decent render time.
I'm going to try FX-linker, sound very good.

HDinstance is quite something, I read a post where it was used 4.33 BILLION polys.
It doesn't seem to have a limit.

Yes, I've just been looking through the V.2 video tutorials, looks great! I'm currently waiting for a green-light on a project that would really benefit from HD instance...I'll finally have a reason to buy it.

have you tried with hypervoxel in sprite mode?
you can build a lots of instance with small effort, i use it recently to build a tree forest.
