View Full Version : Mouse for Serious 3d Work?
CGzero 07-13-2008, 12:57 AM What mouse would you guys recommend for 3d modeling / computer graphics?
I have 2 traditional mice (2 buttons with scroll wheel) and to be honest working in a lot of programs, these mice feel very unnatural and clunky. I have done a bit of research on mic and I came across this one Evoluent (http://www.evoluent.com/vm3w.html) , but im not sure how it would feel working on 3d graphics all day. Any suggestions?

Have you tried a 3D mouse? I've never owned one of these but I have tried using one at a trade show. I couldn't get the hang of it but I've heard some 3D people swear by them.

They have a bunch of vids that show the product in use. It's definitely a different way to go, I'm just not sure which direction it will take you.
Anyone else out there with this type of mouse that can give us a real, first person review of this technology for 3D modeling? Good or bad.

Indeed. The logitec gaming mice are probably the best mice I've used for cg.

The smaller the better, so is doesn't push your keyboard aside.

Just use whatever's most comfortable. Go to a decent computer shop where there's lots of mice on display and try them for comfort. If it's comfortable, you'll work better. My girlfriend uses a laptop mouse because she has small hands...it gives me cramps after 2 minutes so it would be pointless for her to recommend a mouse to me. I can recommend the Logitech G5 but it might not suit you....which is why you need to try them.

Again - Logitech.
One of the higher end mice, make sure it's a LASER mouse and not a run of the mill optical mouse - they'll track on anything.
My preference is probably for a wired one, although both my mice are wireless. My mobile phone can last a week on a single charge, I'm yet to find a mouse that lasts more than a day.
The G7 has ejectable batteries - which I find very amusing because it feels (a little) like ejecting the cartridge on a gun - and after all, the mouse is your weapon :)

My all time favorite : the Logitech Mouseman Traveler !( discontinued model unfortunately ) : not ergonomic at all but incredibly fast !!!

A friend of mine owned one of these, they're ok, you're supposed to use it in conjunction with a normal mouse, it tends to be used as viewport navigation. I personally found it a little too pointless to justify the hefty price tag.
I currently use a Logitech MX Revolution, it's great, but the cheaper models are almost certainly just as good.
