View Full Version : Help with my new build
Dan Wade 07-12-2008, 04:11 PM Ok,
building my first pc. Specs: intel quad core 2.66, 8 gig ram, 300 GB sata HD, dvd sata drive, stiker 2 mobo, bgf geforce 9800 ocx.
All parts fitted. Gets to the bios fine, finds my memory and cpu etc.
After a few mins, regardless of what im doing, the machine powers down. I have a LCD poster fitted to the MOBO for error messages. I goes through all the stages fine, it gets to check IDE, then it comes up with ERRORMSG. Now, i find this pretty odd as im not using any IDE devices as far as i know. My cpu fan is on with everything else, any ideas?

Lots of info on the Web about this MOBO and Bios problems. Does your system stay up long enough to flash the bios? Many owners say the latest bios (1202?) fixes a lot of these problems.
Also, if it works for a few minutes and shuts down, what are you system temps like? Take the system down to it's minimum configuration to test. Put minimum memory in and disconnect all drives. Just see if the machine will stay up with a bios screen while monitoring temps.

Yea, it was a case of the CPU overheating. I had taken it out and forgot that you needed to apply apply the special gel for the fan. Sorting that out tomorrow.
Has anyone else having problems with the Asus Striker 2 mobo? Before this issue i had another error when trying to install vista 64. After a few mins into install, would get the blue screen of death. The error code seemed to be related to a graphic card issue. So will look into that after sorting the cpu.

As far as I gather 8 gigs of ram is still a tricky one to get stable, and you have to set at below rated spec settings. You may also need to give a bit of bump in voltage to your North Bridge.
If memory isn't stable then you will have troubles with installing your OS.
My advice would be to get yourself a copy of memtest. If you have a bootable USB disk, then stick it on that. (There's plenty of info online on how to make a usb disk bootable. just google). You can also run it from a floppy.
Set your bios so that your USB disk is the first drive to boot from. Then reboot and run memtest. You will probably want to leave memtest running for a couple of hours or so, to check that you aren't getting any errors.
This is important, because even if you get your OS installed, if the memory isn't stable then you will have a whole host of problems, including the risk of OS corruption.

Memtest
http://www.memtest.org/
Direct link for USB Key version.
http://www.memtest.org/download/2.01/memtest86+-2.01.exe.zip
USB Bootdisk
http://www.bootdisk.com/pendrive.htm
For making a USB bootdisk. Look at Method 2. If I remember right HP Drive Key Boot Utility Version 7.41
Once installed and running it will ask you for an OS image file. You can download that from here.
http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm
Look down the page at the non Windows based image files. Win98SE for instance.

Danny boy! You forgot thermal paste on your cpu? Shame on you ;)
I have a feeling that might sort out your blue screening as well...
You can pick up cheap-ish paste and cpu cleaning compounds from yoyotech just off tottenham court road.
