View Full Version : Long time Fan questions
ftaswin 07-12-2008, 12:26 PM Hi All,
I'm a long time fan of Cinema 4D and was using it extensively on version 8 (and 8.5?). I mainly use maya but recently I have to get a hold of version 10.5 on a job to transfer data back and forth from and to maya and I must admit it has came a long long way. I really enjoy using it and somehow Maxon listened to my dream of having adjustable zoom, pan and roll viewport navigation. Loved it!
A few questions:
1. When I change Move acceleration in pref it helped me zoom in faster than default, which I like a lot, but also increase the pan acceleration, which I find annoying. Is there any way I can seperate the two? I thought the scale acceleration was there for zoom but I was wrong.
2. I'm aware that c4d still unable to do point level animation to bake deformed objects but I search and found this Godsend tag named point cache with very little info about it even in the manual. Can anyone point me a right direction of how to use this thing? I need some deformed objects to be exported as FBX to Maya with very little luck. Looked into MDD too but there is no MDD reader for Maya (not that I know of anyway)
Thank you in advance and well done, Maxon...... Can't wait to play with Mograph and (a bit sceptical) Mocca.

Sorry I can't help with the Maya<-->Cinema issues. But if you are interested in checking out Mocca, you definitely don't want to miss Cactus Dan's Rigging Plugins (http://www.cactus3d.com/Plugins.html). I'm just now really starting to learn them myself, but (like countless others on this forum) can recommend them without hesitation. They run without a license in the demo version of Cinema... Have fun :)

Hello,
as far as 1 goes, I'm hoping somebody knows how to do this, but sadly I don't think you can separate the two. Camera "zoom" is actually a move forward like panning is move sideways, but still it is very important to have this separated soon, it's the only thing left annoying me when using a tablet.
As for 2, as far as I know C4D unfortunately doesn't export point level animation, it only imports it with FBX. I really hope they add an export function as well soon.
I think the excellent 3rd party MDD plug in is the only way you can get PLA out of c4d, I was looking into that too, but didn't have time recently to actually test it with a character. But simple PLA with a cube did work.
So if all goes well with mdd, you'll probably just have to find a plug in to import it into maya, or use another program to import the MDD and export it to fbx (I hear Blender is an ideal program for import/export, and it's free, so that could be used for your transfer). I think there is a plug in for maya too, but can't remember it right now.
Camera "zoom" is actually a move forward l Moving the camera along the line of sight is dolly not zoom. When zooming you don't change the position of the camera but the focal length

Well yes, that is what I meant by move forward and put the "zoom" in turned commas... But it's a different action, handled by different keys/buttons, and separate control over it's acceleration would be a priority, at least for me.

i think zooming camera depens on which object you're targeting, so just try to change your target and you'll see how fast or slow camera zoom will take effect :)

Wanted to add my 2 bits + a question. I have to keep the Preferences tabbed into my interface with "viewport" selected as I too have to adjust the move acceleration because the zoom is connected with it. Is it possible to dock "move accel" to the HUD for easier access?

Hi - PointOven can import MDD data into Maya I think. I made a quickie demo & breakdown of how to get PointCache cloth data out of Cinema here (http://forums.luxology.com/discussion/topic.aspx?id=21706), it ends up in modo but the principle's the same for Maya I assume.

BakeToPLA (http://www.aixsponza.com/index.php?prefs=page__1___lang__en___enum__frame_software___width__700___&accesskey=3) can bake a PLA track from deformed objects.

Not sure what I'm doing wrong but if I create a cube, make it editable, put a bend deformer on it, animate the deformer parameters and then try and use the Bake to Pla plugin it doesn't work.
If I select the deformer and run the plugin I get a null object, if I select the mesh that's being deformed and run the plugin it crashes Cinema (10.5, PC WinXP) every time..
cheers,

Not familiar with it myself but I understand the Point Cache tag in R10.5 does this.

I tried I tried and I tried. Nothing happened, all options greyed out. Very little info about it. Here and even the manual. I'm stucked :(
Anyone used pointCache successfully before?

You have to click 'Store State' to set the initial state of your object before the options become available. This is covered in the Help.
There are free tutorials over on Cineversity that cover the basics of using the tag and deformer.
