I have been using save scene states for a long time in 2008 but we just updated to 2009 and I spoted a problem everytime I use photometric lights and saved scene states. The issue is if you create a photometric - free light turn on shadows and set it to mental ray shadow map then open the mental ray Shadow Map drop down change the Map size to anything. (i used 2048) Now create a save scene state make sure all of the options are highlited. Now change something (add a texture or something) and create another save scene state. Now restore the original save scene state. Pay close attention to the mental ray shadow map drop down, once you restore all the settings are returned to default. I have tested this on two different computers using 3d max 2009 and the issue has arrizen on both systems. Please try to duplicate the error to make sure its not a bug we have here at work. Im hoping someone can find a solution for this, save scene states is very useful for what we do here. I have not had this issue in 2008, when I set up batch renders to run through and render all my passes and other information, I have it change scene states to change a highligh I have on the object, if the mental ray shadow map, map size is at 512 you can imagine how awsome my shadows look.
