It looks like there was a lot of work involved here and there were things I liked. But I had a hard time getting past the uncanny valley. It would be nice to see a good animator go in and really enhance the mo-cap. As an actor I really would have like to see a stronger emotional response to the situation. Also, I really had a hard time reading most of the facial ques and expressions.

i saw the video, and i dont see any differences with another 3d mocap short.
ok, the subject/scenario is different than a gta clip, but she looks like a 3d puppet, not like an actress/star. The render look like a realtime video game ( except for the hair ), and the facial expressions is very basic.
why use a mocap for the long shot with the cellphone ?
she seems to have an heavy head or a parkinson syndrome.

i am sure the team working hard, and they can be proud of their work,
but i think, in this one, the mocap destroy the story.

Her head proportions seem Wrong somehow.
and her head seems very heavy
and yes the uncanny valley is just plain scary in this one.

I`m generally interested in all sorts of cgcharacter but this pic already gives me goosebumps, I think i`ll not miss too much.

Ok - I thought some were being harsh - but the points are valid.
The head does seem odd and then I was drawn to the teeth. Honestly it may have been better to go with a face that was softer/feminine and easier on the eyes because that smile was unsettling - to put it mildly.

In the article it did mention he did everything wrong and this seems more like a beginning or test in future endeavors. If this is his first real round out with mocap I think it's great.

Most mocap is still not much better than this version. To the standard non cg audience it would be fine ignoring the Uncanny Valley and for the most part even with 100+ million dollars and a team of CG genious most folks attempting mocap and realistic CG have not escaped the valley. The Incredible Hulk despite it's 150 Million dollar budget still looked 100% CG. Beowulf still looked like Poser on steroids. Polar Express like the Children of the Corn and Final Fantasy: Spirits Within despite it's budget still looked like Zombies.

Realistic CG and mocap in general are still trying to break that valley.

Personally I think they should stylize the characters a little bit more and start making a movie.

I would buy a movie if it had a good story and graphics of at least this quality. It would be a good direct to DVD style movie and most general audiences wouldn't mind if the story was good. I think these guys could hit a niche market and make some movies. :)

I am sure lots of work went into this. There was nothing in the surroundings, storyline, figure, body language, lighting, soundtrack or acting that pulled me in. Nobody would actually throw a 200 buck phone away, especially since we already suspected that dick Jake was cheating on us. The struggle to throw it away and not actually do it is the thing. A commonplace emotional occurance is really difficult to make exceptional so it will command empathy.

I've known women who would've thrown $500 phones and would even iphones if they got angry enough. I know a woman who actually smashed her expensive cell against the table during an argument just to shut the person up on the phone. when emotions are high people don't act rational or think about cost of cell or what they look like in public. usually its later after they calm down and the rational part kicks back in.

I'm sorry but that was downright scary. However, it does point out a lot of the uncanny valley issues. Lack of true facial motion anatomy, proportions off slightly, skin is plasticy (did you use SSS), walk cycle is choppy. The funny thing is that no matter how you critique it, at least you are in a community that for the most part understands how difficult this stuff is.

So that was what that sound was! :scream:
I stand corrected.

creepy...

...so why was this CG? a real actor being filmed would make this story much better. Why try to recreate the real world in CG?
