Hi

My name is Jacob Grossman and I'm currently studying 3D animation in New Zealand.

Im in the process of rigging my character for my animation showreel and I'm unsure as to which way I should rig my character's tie. I want to build the rig so that in some scenes i can use a rig where the tie flows around without having to animate it, but I also want an fK rig so that in the more difficult shots (my character is going to be fighting a demon posessed photo copier) or where intersection occurs, I can hand animate it.

I've played with nCloth and it works really awesomely but it sucks in relation to playblasting and playback speed. I also tried using hair folicles but found out that moving the base point was really difficult to set up.

Could you tell me how you guys go about rigging for secondary animation, and how to do this the most animation friendly way.

Howdy,

Well, I'm not sure how you'd do it in the application you're using, because I use my own character rigging plugins in Cinema 4D, but the way I usually set up things like that is with a spline IK. Then I create two control systems, one for manual control and the other for dynamic control, which I set up with my CD Spring Constraint. Then I constrain the spline targets to both control systems and create a blend slider to blend between manual control and dynamic control:

nice character design. Is this for an animated short? I look forward to seeing the completed rig :D

Thanks dude. Yea, as part of my couse's final assesment we have to make a 1 - 2 minute long animation. It doesn't have a title yet but heres the basic premise:

A dude (the character im rigging) is sitting at his desk at his job, desperatly waiting for 5pm to roll around. At about 4:45pm his boss drops a humungus pile of paperwork on his desk to be photocopied by 5 - only thing is the photocopier is posessd by a demon.

The photocopier is gonna try and eat him, blind him and stuff so yea... theres the premise :p

ps: could you please explain how you rigged the controllers for the lionesses tail in your showreel? (it rocks!) - so that when you move the end controller the controllers going back up the spine share a portion of the translates (i don't really need it for my tie, it just spiked my interests).

Thanks dude

Hey Jabco!

That whole tail thing was something I learnt from the Art of Rigging 1 a couple years ago. It was one of the videos demonstrating a dynamic hair driving a joint chain...it's all simple stuff. If you can get hold of it it covers some basic rigging ideas.

feel free to shoot me an email if you have any specific problems though

Thanks very much man. I have access to the dvd so I'll check it out.

And thanks for letting me email you. Maybe when my rig is finished you could take a look at it and see if there are any problems i've over looked :p

Fk control rig would work and so would a IK spline system or Dynamic Hair.

If you want to try a cool set up mix a standard IK spline rig and then soft constraint the controller objects from the knot to the end of the tie.

Then when the character moves the tie will look like it is flapping in the wind and delays the motion it recieves from the parent.
