Title: 3DConnexion Spacenavigator
Name: Magnus Rönnkvist
Country: Sweden
Software: Rhino

A viz i made today of a 3dconnexion Spacenavigator controller unit, as i recently bought one of these myself i wanted to try and see if i could model and render it.

Modeling was all done in Rhino3D 4 and materials and rendering was done with Fryrender One (final release). Rendertime for this was 4 hours.

I see my image landed in the gallery now, so i'm adding these two renders i cooked of this model last night. Enjoy!

looks same that i have in my side at work, well done about shaders/render.

carlmentier: Thank you very much :) it's a nice piece of hardware, small yet heavy and quite simple to model (mostly revolve hehe). The tricky part is the lighting and the shaders, they need to look realistic for this to be good and i think i got it quite close to the real thing.

Thanks for looking and commenting. :)

Not bad. I like the little scratches and grunge marks. They really make this look interesting as opposed to shiny and boring (I'm guessing you had the same thing in mind ;) )

BTW is the cord really that thin?? Looks too thin to me. But then again I don't own one. :)

The only problem with modelling this device, is that only people in the industry know what it is. If you show it to a prospective client they'd be like... "hmmm not bad... so is it like a ufo or something??" Not a big issue obviously, just saying.

A reminder to all those who model ipods and mobile phones, there's a whole world out there, you aren't restricted to just the things on your desk ;)

That's all I'll say on that. Keep up the good work.

redbyte: Thanks :) yes i'm a bit tired of always seeing clean models that looks like they never been used, i want realism and in the real world nothing is perfect. The cord, or cable is very thin. You can easily chew it off if you want :D

Hehe yes ofcourse you're absolutely correct, only 3d nerds know what this thing is. And even 3d people are not all that familiar with it which is a shame because it's actually a really nice and useful device. It should probably be included in a whole scene with a human hand on it to better display what it's used for and how.

Modeling stuff on your desk is often easier, then you don't have to walk outdoors.. not that there's anything wrong with that. :) but nature can be quite complex and detailed compared to manmade objects.

Now i recieved some negative feedback on this scene on another forum, they would rather see a clean version without scratches, dirt and stuff and rendered at a much higher resolution so i did that and now got it rendering at 3004x1816 pixels with Fry in a new scenesetup lit by a new hdr with a brand new cable and some other minor tweaks done to the scene.

Here's a small lowres preview of what it looks like so far, i'm posting the full highres shot as soon as it finished rendering either tonight or tomorrow sometimes.

Thanks for looking!

And now the high resolution rendering is finihed, Fryrender worked for 16 hours constantly on this piece but it's quite clean. :) glare and a slight bloom was added during rendering to boost the effect of the blue led's in the device. And i also rebuilt the cable, adjust the scene and some materials, removed the scratches on the plastic parts. Fixed the lighting to make it more exciting (i hope).

I have also watermarked it and compressed it quite a bit to make it uploadable to internet, although the free imagehosting site i used scaled down my image a bit :( this should still give you a idea what it looks like. The full resolution is 3004x1816 pixels.

slightly odd choice of model, but very nice nonetheless.

I recently bought one of these... still is kinda weird to use haha :P but is a cool piece of hardware... nice render, but as previous post say, i think the base is too thin, as well as the cable.... other than that, nice shaders, the blue light is just exactly as the real one, good job.

This device s*cks!

A joystick works better..its too sensitive.
You try to only turn left..but you pan left
You try to move forward...but then you also look down or pan down.
You try to tilt up...you actually tilt and rotate and sometimes pan up as well

Only use it has is to navigate through google Earth etc. (not through 3ds Max...it refuses to work on complicated scenes like buildings etc..sigh)

Very nice work, Max!
some nitpicking: I have one of those on my desk, and from what I can see the only thing missing in the rendering is more anisotropic effect on the brushed metal. It's very visible on the one I have.

Man.. I agree with you.. Mine was sold after a couple of weeks after that post of mine. I never get used to it, I was and i´m still more efficient with a mouse. the rotate/move/scale was as you said too sensitive, and the undo didn´t work!! so I ended up with models rotated in three axes by 0.0006 units.... it isn´t a bad device, but not for my purposes for sure...
