Hey fellow artists, I've been working on the "Matrix Bullet Time" sequence. I have a question though, when I watched actual footage from the Matrix, I noticed that the bullets have some type of opacit displacement in between the rings. The effect remids me of bubbles, but I'm not sure how exactly to achieve this through MAX limits. Suggestions plz.

use refraction on your trails

3D kingdom has a good tutorial on how to do the effects, i did it, changed some stuff and got some really good results, except for the insanly long render time

Nice work, but the image is very dark... I really had to push up the brightness of my monitor to see the effect.

other than that,

Yeah, refractions would be nice. But it would be hard to see them with a black background.

The few times I've used a similar effect I did it in post. For instance just render the rings out in black/white (or colors if you want). Then went into after effects or program of your choice and make it a displace layer. Therefore it displaced the background plate depending on the intensity of the color (or 'blackness' if you rendered it out black/white) of the rings.

Works quite well!

The trails in the films spread out more, make them a little wider going back unless these are high velocity rounds. (sniper rifle AT rife etc)

Ok guys, I've revved up my scene using some of your guys's useful comments. But I have to tell you, I lack the amount of tools in my inventory, having access only to: 3ds MAX 5 (fluent), Photoshop 7.0 ( a few tricks here and there, and Maya 4.5 (totally clueless). Therefore, I am not able to access after effects, although I have premiere.
Now back to the bullet. I need help on refractions. If you watch footage from the first matrix (the part where Neo stops the bulets) there is a refraction -in between- the ripples. I don't know how to explain this, but it looks like the liquid you make bubbles with. Any ideas on how to accomplish this feat? In this picture below, I used another particle spray to give the refractions...:bounce:

PS: I didn't want to refract the box as much, so I moved it to the side. The purpose of the box is to show you the refractions of the background more clearly.

that actually looks pretty damn cool, but put it in an environment that isint 97% sky :D so we can really see what it looks like!
Cheers,
