Hi everyone, this is my first post here. I just recently graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design and am in the process of looking for a job. I want to post my demo reel on here to get some feedback. It mostly consists of a group project that I worked on for the past year (it's still in the works). My primary tasks on this project were co-directing, animation and character rigging, plus any odds and ends to get it finished  . I've posted this on another site and got one response. Please give me some feed back. I promise that you have never seen anything quite like this.

Bradley :buttrock:

OK here is a much faster link to my Reel (http://host63.ipowerweb.com/~josh-sin/movies/reel.mov)

As someone who goes to school with bradley and having seen this thing in various stages of completion. This animation really rocks, and def deserves front page. The transition from global illumination to cell shading really takes the cake. 5 stars baby!!

That was awesome. The animation was great and the effect from GI to Cel Shaded was nice. The end was great too, when you showed the stages it went through.

Did you use maya5's new renderer for that?

Thanks for the feed back and enthusiasm. Not really sure what you mean about the "paycheck" graphiouz. Actually Zoober we used a combination of Maya 4.0 and After Effects to get the cell shaded look. Glad you liked the way it came out. It was a long process to get the look that we wanted.

Thanks to CgMonkey I got to see it, and I must say it's awesome. Lots of blood and gore always add a little extra :D

Great stuff, good job on the animation. Only thing bothering me a little was the sequences with the white models and gi. The animation didn't look finished, and I didn't really see any reason for them to be in there... Nevertheless, great stuff :)

wow! thanks for all of the great responses. I'm sorry about my site acting all funky. If somebody would mirror this i would greatly appreciate it. Urgaffel, yeah i put part of the unfinished part of the animation on my reel. I thought it showed good acting, but the color layer would help it out a lot. It should be finished in a few weeks, then i will update it to my reel. Once again im trying to work things out with my hosting service, but sorry for the inconvenience.

yeah, I go to SCAD as well and I watched like the many computers he used day after day to render when each frame I think he told me took about 11 hours per frame. I must say is it well worth it and some nice animation work.

Hehe, that makes two SCAD students at the same time that take the front page!

yes someone please put up a mirror. If I can get a hold of a copy from somewhere else I will post another link.

Later,

like everybody else I like the GI/cel shade transitions. The reel is a tad violent eh?

I had difficult understanding what the guy was doing in the car, It might have been better to exaggerte his movements more, I also didn't see much in the way of facial animation? I could be wrong though, due to the small resolution.

Overall, a very sweet reel.

Awesome balance between the "making of" shots (showing bones etc...) and final rendered part. As soon as I heard the music I laughed because that was the exact same music I chose for a demo reel I submited recently. 9/10 studios tend to mute it but the animation holds up with out the music. Facial animation did seem minimal though... I understand what you were doing with the car animation I think. When he was in the car was that supposed to be a more realistic animation as opposed to the exageration of the cel shaded version? That's what I thought.

:applause: :applause: :applause:

XbradleyX
05-28-2003, 03:42 AM
Ok, Looks like the mirror is working so much better.

Ok the guy in the car, Leroy, is frustrated with being in traffic. The scene before he just downed a bottle of Dack Janiels (yes we changed the name). So in this scene he is drunk  and is reaching for a bottle of pills to take. And Dimitrios is correct we were going for a more realistic, some what stop motion, animation in the GI render and a more exaggerated animation in the cell shaded animation. We rendered and animated everything out at 15 fps and doubled the timing in after effects to give it that shot on 2's feel to it.

Yeah Dimitrios, I was driving in my car one day and heard "another one bites the dust" and thought, that would be perfect. Yeah I'm sure most people viewing my reel won't even listen to the audio, but it was fun to edit.

KWAK- yeah it is a bit violent, but I think its fun too. I hope most people can see past the violence, and can focus on the animation. I thought it was really fun...and funny, that is why I chose to be a part of this project. I figured, when am I ever going to have the opportunity to do something like this again. There is some facial animation, but it is somewhat subtle. I'm currently working on a piece that focuses more on acting.

Whoa long post... Ok that's it for now.

that guy needs to lay off the twinkies. maybe he wouldnt be so violent. looks good. like some one else said above, i think it needs more facial animation. especially the squidgy( he points to the steering wheel, and untextured) scene.

but definitly great work, you should be very proud of yourself.
good luck and i hope to see you in the field some day.

That's a cute little story. Nicely rendered and everything. I had.. no idea what the guy in the car was doing though.. I could see it was some sort of daydreaming thing he had going on, and I guess he smashed up the gimps in his dream but in reality he took his rage out on a hotdog-stand? But then he was back in the car.. and.. idunno. I don't think the story is well-told regarding following that part of the action.

Anyway, another thought, while it's a nice reel and everything, you say you haven't done it all yourself. Then which parts have you done? Specifically? I wonder how a company that sees this will be able to tell if they should hire you, or one of the other guys that worked on it.. Well I guess a scene-by-scene breakdown on paper works, if that's the route you've taken, but I've always personally liked the idea of making sure one's demoreel clearly shows exactly what you can pull off yourself. Just a thought.

Nice violence going on, I dig the bloodsplattering gibbing :)

Yeah! I finally got to see it! I love all the bits with him kicking the snot out of the gremlin thingies. The violence really doesn't bother me at all. Personally, I think you could have gotten away with more. Definately needs more distruction of the environment.

The holes in the ground and chunks spat up by the gunfire are nice ... add more. More environment distruction and interaction with objects like trashcans or what have you.

The parts in the car had me wondering why you even included them though. The animation was only so-so. I really couldn't tell what it was he was doing except for the part where he popped a whole container of pills and later beat on the horn/steering wheel.

I would imagine that if you're looking for a job as an animator, you'd want to include works that really communicate what the character is doing. In those shots inside the car they didn't look like much more than movement tests to check the model for deformations.

Kind of like ... "If I turn his upper body to the left and raise his right arm, what happens to the armpit?" ... sort of deal. Boring and only of interest to the character modellers/skinners.

A couple other spots seemed a little jerky too (like when he's shooting at one gremlin then throwing the other into the air to blast), but overall it's not too bad.

Good music, good models, & good animation ... but I think it could be better. :wip:

zandernice, I'm not too sure about the reference that you were speaking of. I don't think it was derived from that to the best of my knowledge, but it wasn't my original story so I'm not sure. I could find out for you if you really want to know.

Ok I think a lot of people are trying to view this piece as a complete story, because it is the only thing on my reel right now. I had to cut it up so if flowed with the action and the music. I promise the finished piece makes a lot more sense. I'm sure it's confusing to have never seen the finished animation in its entirety. But it is a demo reel and I think most people can get a sense of the animation.

I felt that I needed to cut up the scene in the car, because it is 30 seconds long. To long for one scene on a montage demo reel. It tried it and it made the reel a bit slow in those places.

Gaggle, yeah the story, in short, is about a guy stuck in traffic. He takes some substances, hallucinates, kills these little alien midgets, then comes back to reality and has been making a fool of himself beating up hotdogs. So I think you followed it fairly well, but like I said above, this is a montage demo reel not a complete story. And I do have a breakdown sheet of all of the things that I was responsible for. I'll try and post it here pretty soon.

Kirt, Thanks for your feedback it was very helpful, I will keep those ideas in mind when I edit together a new demo reel. As for the environment destruction, in the cell shaded part we were trying to make the environment very simplistic. Just Leroy and the aliens in this stark white environment. As for your comment about the shots inside the car, I think that I have covered most of that in the above statements. But I was the Character Rigger on this piece as well and I did insert some of those scenes just to show deformations. I think a break down sheet would help everyone; I'll try and get one posted soon. Anyway thanks again for your comments.

Another long reply

Keep the comments coming.

Nice to see some more LEEROY! It's been two years since I saw the boards in concept design, I was wonderin' what was goin on. Did Beauchamp do your sound? If so, did he purchase the rights to it from DeWolf music? We reanimated and tweaked Granny, but we can't submit it into anything because we don't own the rights to the damn music.

That car transition looks great.

Asking for a job in this industry could be likened to asking someone to shoot you in the face point blank with a revolver. Depending where you work I suppose, there are a lot of sweat shops (even large famous ones), I think it's our job as the recent grads to churn out great work at a cheap price so that the animation director can take all the credit. heh j/k..

Good work Brad, I miss our al night Lock-Ins at the labs, at least now you'll be paid to work tirelessly like the living dead, but it's harder to do when it's someone elses vision, and a shitty one at that (mostly).

CE

PS- Ill up the new and FINAL granny short to the site sometime, I haven't had any time between work and siggraph.

Yeah, I saw the Leroy Project last night in the CA Motion show and I remember seeing parts of it in the works earlier this year, but I was pleased with the results and glad that you are still working on it for the sound is a little mismatched, but I am sure you know all the things you want to fix.

In my opinion, you did an excellent job for a student short animation and look forward to seeing more of your work around and hopefully in a movie sometime.

Good luck and keep it up!

oh, now it makes sence. When you make it into a short, make sure you get a close up shot of those pills. its a vital part of the story.

Hope you're lucky and you'll find yourself a nice job where you can make more animations like this, since I doubt there are many studios arround that are willing to take the risk, since washingpowder ads pays more moneys for less work.

Cherish your project, forget remarks like 'I think it looks like this animation I saw last year' or 'that one handmovement was a bit sluggish'. You (and your fellow coworkers) made a fine piece of animation ready to be taken further. In this animation or another....

Hope you'll find a place where you'll be able to do that.

Nice work. The lighting in the the car looked good and I liked the cell shader. I thought the blood looked great too.
The only crit. I have has to do with the animation of the head and facial animation. In parts the head its self looks as if it is swimming or the action is too slow ( not as crisp). Also some facial animation would do wonders. Over-all nice work!
