Thank you for all the kind comments, When Tom told me he was gonna make over my tutorial, I had no idea it would turn out this good. I really hope that this helps everyone who reads it.
I am in the process of starting a Gaming curriculum for High Schoolers. A friend of mine and I are starting it here in Austin Texas as a sort of extra curricular activities to be held on saturdays. You can read more about it at www.cgdojo.com I will be posting all the tutorials up on that site. They will be geared towards total noobies so they might be too simple, but they may be just what you need!
Thanks everyone, and thanks tom!

Great Tut!
Awesome tutorial. The texturing section floored me. I can't believe I've never seen a texturing tutorial that bakes the light so that you don't waste all that time with painting the large forms.
Thank you so much.

Awesome tutorial. It's a little harsh. no love for the feeling types. Aside from that little beef, thank you thank you thank you for providing an informative tut.

Interesting, but I wouldn't call it low poly.

Yeah, nice! But in my opinion the steps are a bit too quick for a beginner to understand. In the first step he already builds up the whole mouth area and so on. I think beginners would benefit more from a step by step tutorial! But the texturing tutorial is great, I got some new ideas how to do nice looking skin and stuff!
well i say that is AWSome i mena i was looking for a way to do skin and boom !!!!! there it was and i am also going to tryout that new way of polymodeling i love poly but never thought to start out with a cylinder its like a maya approuch never seen anyone teach this way using max its awsome

I think it's a bad tutorial personally . One approach and not a very good technique . Doesn't anyone use edge loops and consider animation when they make models ?? :shame:
Poopinmymouth
05-27-2003, 04:49 PM
Thank you for all the great comments. I am taking everyones responses into consideration for the current tutorials I am working on.
the magic pen: I am sorry you think its a bad tutorial, and I am interested in why you think there are no edge loops, I am very particular about keeping edge loops, and considering how it will deform for animation.
cant: the reason it is not step by step is 2 fold. One, I did this tutorial after the model was completed, and only took screen grabs of my save points. two, all the step by step tutorials have no room for creativity, everyone who does it, does it the exact way. In trying to figure out how to do the next step, a person might come up with a new and interesting way that works great for them, that I never even thought of. At least thats what I have found when reading tutorials. Step by step are great, but they have their place, this is def not a step by step tute, and was never meant to be one, But I will try to be more explanatory in my next tute.
great tutorial. ive been looking for this kind of low poly modeling.

thanks for the tutorial. there is definitely some good information here. i especially learned a lot from the texturing section.
can you show a little more step by step detail on how you 'cut' up areas like the peaks and valleys (what tool are you using)?
it looks like you have modelled the armor as a separate object on top of the chest. i would really like to know how you rigged the character so the armor and body deform correctly (i am working on a model right now that has some armor on the shoulder).

that was a great tut! the texturing section REALLY helped me out. thanks alot! :applause: :applause: :applause:

for the peaks and the valleys, I used cut poly tool, in edit poly mode. I cut the lines I want, right over top of existing lines, then remove out the old lines. I did model the armor separate, but I then merged it onto the body to save the polys below. getting the armor to deform was pretty hard. right now I have all the verts that define the armor assigned a full 1 value to a single bone, so that they never bend. It happened to work in this instance, but who knows on others? thanks again fro all the compliments and critiques.

ive to say its a great tutorial in my opinion!
on one hand it might become very complicated for some starters to figure out how you did some things, but! on the other i love your approach of telling the audience what has to be done roughly and let them figure out their ways to do so. that provides a great personal learning experience imo.
i, for myself, think theres a lot of reference out there on how to cut lines and so on (tutorials, software manuals, blabla)....no need to be mentioned in your tut.
i for myself dont like step by step tuts that much.... most tend to do exactly what theyre told to, instead of thinkin why it has to be done. that leads to modellers who need to use the tut every time they do a modell.
to sum up.... i love it! but i wouldnt consider it either a beginners tut nor a low poly tut ;)
excuse my bad use of language if theres some...im not an english native speaker ;)
[edit] agreein with troub on the uv part.... would be needed if you consider the tut to cover it all, from modelling to texturing :)
