CGTalk - Hot Spot Occlusion

I am trying to get an occlusion effect in my current composite and with no luck. I have the hot spot on a 3D Image Plane and then another plane moves into the foreground and blocks it, and the occlusion effect doesn't work. The light and flare should "wink out" but it doesn't. I've tried a bunch of different combinations, but no luck. Any suggestions? I can send you a copy of the workspace if that helps at all.

Yeah, Posting an example scene would be better.

It sounds like you are trying to achieve this with the wrong workflow.
