View Full Version : Rendering : Transparent Shadows
snot_nose 05-26-2003, 02:37 PM Hello
I have some objects that i want to use for my background
but the problem is that they have too much polys for a background object, so i want to render them with an alpha image and put their image on a flat plane with the alpha in the opacity slot.
everything works fine, except that the plane cast a squared shadow.
does any1 know away that i can make my plane cast a shadow in the shape of the image??

You'll have to use raytraced shadows for that, all the other shadowtypes in max ignore opacity.

crap,
if i will use the raytraced lights i think it will take me even more memory then using the objects.
there isn't some way to use a map for the shadow of an object?
anyway
tanx for the help

you could use a shadow map....
go to the lights shadow parameters and apply the alpha map of your objects texture....
now the plane has a nice shadow (and so does all the other objects in the scene!!!!!)
i guess you can fix this by making a copy of all the lights, apply the shadowmap, and exclude all the other objects in the scene from these lights.(this seems like a hard way to do it, but i dont know any other way....)
cheers!!!

or one that goes on 3dlabs wildcat....:D
or capture the shadow from the objects in the background and use them on a light gel...

totally useless reply
since a videocard has nothing to do with the actual rendering of the image.

Ok, I think what i will do is that i will try place my objects (the dumpsters and streetlamps)
in places that the shadow won't be visible to the camera.
and places that will have to be visible i will use the xref objects instead of the bitmapped planes, or i will use an extra light that will include only this objects and will have a raytraced shadow.
i didn't understand what the shadow map in the render elements is used for.
can't it help me in some way?

i didnt mean shadow map in render elements.
select the light and go to the modify tab-shadow parameters.... it determines the shape (or colour) of the shadow...

a bit time consuming but you could trace the image with a spline and have a 2D object that is the correct shape casting the shadows. so the image object = Object settings, disable cast shadows. shadow object = receve shadows &visible to camera disabled. I'm assuming this would be the right setup, if not just tweking these setting would give you the desired result.:)
