I'm just trying to get some input on what's the best renderer for a cartoon/sketch-type 3D render.

I've looked a bit into CartoonReyes (http://www.reyes-infografica.net/cartoon.php), and FinalToon by Cebas (http://www.finalrender.com/products/products.asp?UD=10-7888-35-788&PID=37). I like FinalToon's "sketchy" type renders....

Any ideas or advice?

Thanks in advance...

I assume you use 3D Max.... so why donīt you make yourself a cell shader

Tutorial (http://members.aol.com/forrestbro/how_cartoon.html)

or

MAX 5 has a cartoon shader built in.

Yes...I use 3ds max 5. I know about max's cell shader, but, like I said in my first post, I'm looking into a renderer that can do more sketchy lines, like FinalToon.

hmmm, not sure what you want exactly, but try this: I prefer this to the others.

skyboysky , i have been using both FinalToons AND illustrate!

The illustrate! engine might be more complete , but in the same time is a bit more complex to have full control... time consumption i guess.. further more - it will output in a variety of formats, from AI to SWF, through FH* , which is basically why i use it. an animation can be output in real vector swf....

The final render gives you fast-built in styles that works very good, and has a built in support for the real max shaders and materials, and a great control over line types...

One more surprisingly good technical render is the one built-in the ARCHICAD 8 (of sigraph)..

Archicad is an architecture design program that native supports 3ds,dwg,dxf etc... so you can impoet the object and render it there (only bitmaped formats, tiff, jpg, and bmp), i can tell you it can get you a VERY HIGH QUALITY techinical illustaration renders.. sketch like and carbon....

i have been illustrate and plasma (http://www.discreet.com)
illustrate is ok (like sebakrembo said) but plasma is easier..but it does have it ups and down.plasma also can import dxf,ai,3ds...etc.
but for sketchy lines, i guess FinalToon is much better..dont know bout you guys?:hmm:

* sebakrembo - i would like to know more about 'Archicad 8'.plz. i've heard about i before....thanks in advance

For example, in ink n paint (the max5 toon shader) or the toon shader that ships with brazil, you can use noise or bitmaps or whatever to modulate the thickness of your inked lines.

wow, posm, great list of resources...especially the final one. Thanks!

soulburn3d, for me, a "sketchy" line is like a sketch, a drawing. The max5 toon shader will give you a noise-induced blobby line which is ok, but it's nothing like a sketchy drawing.

being someone who has used a few celshaded workarounds and is helping develop a serious NPR renderer, I'd recommend for max you go with Final toon, it has the easiest flexibility. Cartooonreyes your going to find limiting pretty fast. Illustrate is quite flexible, but a little harder to achieve a wide variety of effets that final toon can. As for the sketchy look, don't assume your just going to place it on adjust a few settings and get a sketchy look. For a really good really effective sketch look you'll probably have to apply a few sepereate lines on all with their own noise levels and such, varyin opactities. I find watching people using NPR renderers, that those who can do those arts classically can typically do the most convincing cg renders. I guess its because they understand how line really work and such, I don't know.

i think tomcat is one of the best i have used, but i just render out my outlines in maya, then composite over a toon shader. are you in max? oh sorry i dont know what to reccomend for max. when i used max long ago, i think david ghoulds rendere was aamzing. i am not sure if that is still available.
